Physical Description

Image

Nkemi is short, about 5’0” tall, and has the lithe build, dark skin and rounded features common to many Mugrobi galdori. She wears her tightly curled hair short, though she rarely styles it beyond washing it and combing it out. She has a mobile, expressive face, and uses it to good effect. When not working, she usually has a smile crinkling the edges of her eyes. On the job, she has mastered a more serious expression, although it’s still hard for her to suppress the occasional smile.

Nkemi has learned good posture through her work as a Prefect, and is always careful to sit straight up in court or stand tall while investigating. In her off hours, though, her posture tends to be casual and easy; she likes to sit cross-legged, whether in a chair or on the floor, and can hold a low, flat-footed squat as easily as she stands.

Nkemi tends to favor very Mugrobi clothing; she wears loose, light shirts and pants most often, usually white or tan, although she has a fondness for bright reds and oranges as well. She will wear skirts for the occasional formal occasion which requires it, but definitely prefers pants. She finds the idea of a corset bordering on the obscene, and isn’t entirely sure it isn’t some sort of prank Anaxas has played on Mugroba; her underthings are light and comfortable, and don’t restrict her movement or breathing in the least. She rarely wears much in the way of make up or jewelry; her ears were pierced, once, but the holes seem to have closed. Sandals are her preferred footwear, and like many Mugrobi she carries goggles and a scarf in case of dust storms.

Personality

Image

Most people who know Nkemi would describe her as cheerful and earnest; some, perhaps particularly her colleagues in the Prefects, might add idealistic or naive. Nkemi would disagree; she doesn't see herself as idealistic so much as optimistic. She is not - at least, not yet - worn down by the rigors of detective work, although she does approach her job as a way to do good.

Nkemi is highly inquisitive and very diligent, particularly when she wants to do or understand something. These traits have served her well as a student, as a caster, and as a Prefect. She has a high capacity for absorption and can easily be bogged down in the weeds of a problem or task, rather than seeing the bigger picture.

Nkemi is also outgoing socially; she is an active and empathetic listener, although some times she can push a little too hard in trying to understand. She is comfortable in large groups of people, in busy crowds and markets, but she is also comfortable spending time alone. She is highly independent, and values her independence; being forced to rely on others grates on her, no matter how much she likes them.

Nkemi, like many Mugrobi, values honor and honesty highly. She would not willingly lie; she would be deeply shocked to learn that any Mugrobi galdor had done so. She did not grow up around many imbali, and did not have imbali friends at Thul'Amat; however, she is comfortable with their place in society, at least in theory. She tends to view humans and wicks as inferior, but isn't especially prejudiced; they are all liars, as are imbali, but it's scarcely their fault. Although she doesn't have any human or wick friends, per se, she would be willing to take a complaint or statement from one without (too much) prejudice, even if she might not believe every word they say.

Backstory

Image

Nkemi pezre Nkese was born in Dkanat, a small town outside of Serkaih, the first (and only) child of a loving mother and a caring, if reclusive, father. Her mother was born there as well, and had inherited a parcel of land from her family. She and Nkemi’s father had moved from Thul’Amat to Dkanat about five years before Nkemi was born, after her father left Thul’Amat during his post-graduate work. Nkemi’s mother oversaw the family’s goat herding, and her father took an intermittent job tending to some of the grounds at Serkaih; otherwise, he largely spent his time gardening in his quiet periods, and writing lengthy manuscripts during more manic phases. Nkemi’s mother’s sister lived with them as well, on and off.

It was a strange, quiet childhood, and Nkemi was left largely to her own devices. There were few other galdori children to play with, and her lessons were rather incoherent. The brightest times were when they went to visit her father’s family in Thul Ka; the three of them would go, together, on a long rattling carriage ride, and Nkemi’s father would disappear once they reached the city. Although her mother always seemed worried during these times, to Nkemi they were joyful, full of playing with her cousins, of bright, chattering dinners and the sights and sounds of the city. In later years she understood; in later years she learned the meaning of the word sanatorium. At the time, she knew nothing of it.

At ten, Nkemi went off to Thul’Amat. She faced a good deal of teasing for her rural accent and rather scattered learning, but she made friends and worked hard, and thrived. The longer she spent at Thul’Amat, the harder it was to go home to Dkanat, the caverns and goats, the quiet house, and the uncertainty each day brought with it.

Clairvoyant conversation interested Nkemi from the first day she learned about it. She found a mentor in Professor Ruedka pezre Etriket, her sixth form clairvoyance instructor, who was also a consultant with the Prefects of Thul Ka. Ruedka encouraged Nkemi to pursue clairvoyance, and to pursue a rigorous tseruh - honors - project of her own devising, a proof of concept at intersection of static and clairvoyant conversations. She also encouraged Nkemi in her hesitant but burgeoning desire to become a prefect herself.

Nkemi was recruited into the Prefects shortly after graduation; it was challenging, but she loved the work and loved Thul Ka, and immersed herself fully into it. It was several years later, as a Junior Subprefect in Windward Market that Nkemi first became involved in the case which would become known as the Windward Strangler. She, in fact, had investigated one of his earliest cases, before any links were made between them, and was the most junior prefect on the task force ultimately created to catch him. Working with Professor Ruedka, who was consulting on the case, Nkemi set about trying to find the Windward Strangler through magical as well as secular means.

Unfortunately, he found her first.

In Loshis 2719, the Strangler broke into Nkemi’s apartment in the middle of the night, and murdered her roommate. Nkemi, furious and terrified, was taken off the case. Rather than accept the decision, she found the Strangler on her own, and a long chase ended in his leaping into the Turga rather than face capture.

The spectacular failure of the Prefects to bring the Strangler to justice was ridiculed in the papers. Partly for her own safety and partly to help her recover, Nkemi was seconded to the Seventen as part of an exchange delegation in the Fall of 2719.

Career and Income

Occupation: Prefect

Nkemi is a Prefect of Thul Ka; prior to her secondment to Anaxas, she was a Junior Subprefect in the Windward Market district.

Income: Average

Nkemi makes a modest salary as a Prefect; she is generally frugal and careful with her money, and has some small savings. She does not have much in the way of inheritance or expected inheritance, and sends money to her mother monthly.

Housing and Inventory

Housing: Renter

For most of her time as a prefect, Nkemi lived in a small, shared flat on the edge of Windward Market district. Since Loshis 2719, she has lived as a boarder with the family of an older Prefect. In Anaxas, she expects to live either in the Seventen barracks, or potentially with a member of the Seventen.

Inventory

Nkemi owns a variety of clothing suitable for her job and station, including accoutrements specific to Mugroba like goggles. She has a decent collection of paper and pens, and a small collection of grimoires. She owns a weighted baton, which she often hangs from her belt while doing investigative tasks. She owns a set of gold ear cuffs, which were a gift, and no other jewelry.
