Physical Description

Matty Morvay is, to put it simply, very pretty. He takes a great amount of care in his appearance, and it shows. He has a heart-shaped face and almond eyes the colour of warm honey, framed in long, dark lashes, often accented with dark eyeliner. His complexion is a warm, milk coffee color and his hair is charmingly cut in a short, asymmetrical style and swept to one side, occasionally flopping in his face. The colour changes regularly, but is usually some pastel shade. He tends to favour pink. purple, or blue. If he has gone some time without colouring it again, it begins to show dark brown roots. Every bit of his appearance is carefully crafted and put together, accentuating the things he can’t change and altering what he can to suit his liking. He is short, standing about 5’4’’, and his build is lithe.

He often dresses in bright jewel tones, and his wardrobe is made up of clothing of all types, often bought cheaply second hand and altered to suit his tastes, or scavenged and repaired. His style of dress could be considered eclectic, but rarely cares what others think and tends to just do what he wants. He also often accessorizes with jewelry of all sorts, though it is cheap, or fake, and only really looks pretty.

Personality

Matty's personality is a bit less attractive than he is. He tends to be incredibly self-centered. He is always thinking about what is best for him, what will benefit him the most, or how he can get the best end of any deal. Growing up mostly on his own has made his own comfort and wellbeing his number one priority above all else. He is also quite possessive. What's his is his and he is not one to share. He has precious little that truly belongs to him, and he will fight tooth and nail to keep it. On top of this, he is incredibly vain, as evidenced by how carefully he puts together his appearance. He may be dirt poor and living on a barge, but he is not going to look like it if he can help it. The one shining facet of his personality is that he absolutely adores children, and is always very sweet when dealing with them, and happy to indulge them. He is very well-spoken. Some would say almost too well, for a wick. It is a trait he developed during his time working as a somewhat high-class prostitute, and he can usually talk his way out of — or into — most things, should he feel so inclined.

Despite joining the Resistance, Matty truly does not care one way or the other about most people. He thinks gollies could stand to be taken down a peg or two, but that's about all he thinks about them. Above all else, he's in it for the money and the freedom. He doesn't much like that the galdori seem intent on taking that freedom, though, and figures he probably will fight to keep it just as hard as he'd fight to keep anything else that's his.

Backstory

Matty never knew his parents, but he assumes that he must have had some at some point, as he clearly exists and, last he checked, it’s not possible for people to spring up from the ground like plants. Whoever they were, they cared enough to leave him with a name when they deposited him on the steps of a shabby, run-down orphanage in Vienda: Matsu Dirix. When he was a small child, he would sometimes fantasize about what his parents were like and why they left him. Perhaps he was a bastard from some high-ranking official’s sordid affair, or maybe his parents were on the run from one thing or another and they left him where they thought he would be safe, intending to come back for him, but something prevented them from doing so. Harsh realities eventually shattered any fanciful delusions, as is often the case.

The orphanage that served as his home was not a happy one. It was overcrowded, and very often there was not enough food for the number of mouths. It was also not uncommon for children to be forced into working, often in terrible jobs, with their meager pay being forfeit to the corrupt owner of the orphanage. Matsu lucked out, in the end. He was given to a brothel as a housekeeper, and the owner there saw he could be useful and was quick to take him on fully, freeing him from the clutches of his former guardians, if one could call them that. He started out helping in the laundry, and was taught to mend and care for clothes. He had a knack for tailoring, and often helped fix and alter outfits. One of the other housekeepers, an older wick woman, also taught him some simple magic. As he grew older, it became clear that his looks were his best asset, and he was quick to decide to use them to his advantage. When a spot opened up, he asked to be allowed to take on clients, as the house was lacking in male companions.

He proved to be very popular, and very quickly worked his way up to being one of the top earners, much to the chagrin of some of the others. Pretty and versatile, he was a favourite of both men and women. He had a number of doting clients, and wanted for almost nothing. It seemed to others that he had found himself a somewhat charmed life, but behind his carefully constructed persona, Matsu hated it. He saw his work as biding his time until he had enough expensive gifts and trinkets to sell them all and leave the brothel behind. His way out just happened to show up in the form of a drunken mechanic with an eye for the finer things.

Together, they plotted Matsu’s escape. It was simple, really. Make it look like a regular appointment, then out the window and into the night with a bag full of expensive gifts and not a glance spared behind them. Matsu changed his name, changed his hair, and sold his horde, gaining enough money to purchase a ramshackle boat with his newfound companion, which they now live on in the Viendan harbor. Now under the name Matty Morvay, he is enjoying his newfound freedom and refuses to set foot anywhere near where he used to work. Some may see this as a step down from his arguably cushy former life, but Matty relishes in it. He is finally his own man, and answers to the only person that matters: himself.
