Appearance

Cassidy Elwes is a tall, imposing woman. She is above average height for a human woman, and stands at about 5’11. Years of physical labour and brawling have given her quite the physique. Despite her intimidating physical presence, she has a kind face, at the center of which is a slightly crooked nose that has been broken a time or two, and she is often smiling. She has long brown hair that is often restrained in a knot or tail, and piercing blue eyes. Her complexion is fair and freckled. She has several scars on her body. They range from knife scars from her times as a brawler to burns from when she was learning to bake, and tend to be localized to her arms and upper body, though she has one scar on her face that cuts across her mouth from her chin to just above her upper lip and a few on her legs. The most notable scar is a rather nasty one along her right ribs from an injury that ended her fighting career. She dresses simply and often in a masculine style, as it offers more freedom of motion which is helpful in her physically demanding job. When she is working she wears an apron over her clothes that is embroidered with the name and logo of her bakery, and tends to be covered in a fine layer of flour.

Personality

Cass' personality generally is incongruous to her appearance. While she looks intimidating, she generally tries to maintain a serene disposition unless she is provoked. She is very kind. She has had a hard life, but she hasn't let it harden her. She will help anyone who asks her, provided they do so nicely and what they're asking for isn't illegal (although even that is a grey area). She is generous and distributes what baked goods she doesn't sell in a day to anyone who comes to the back door of her bakery after closing, usually without question. She is very protective of her establishment and her lower race clientele. She is boisterous, but not aggressive, and generally only utilizes intimidation when someone decides to be an asshole. As she can effectively neutralize most people, this tactic tends to work quite well. She has a strong moral code and operates under the philosophy of “do no harm, take no shit”, which might seem ironic to some given her background.

Cassidy is generally willing to work with anyone, but, being human, tends to hold her own race in the highest regard. She doesn’t mind wicks, so long as they keep their magic to themselves and don’t go around trying to scam her customers. She generally views galdori with contempt, but is capable of stomaching them in short bursts provided they buy a pie or something and don’t cause trouble. As for passives, she doesn’t have much personal experience, but tends to see them in a sympathetic light, since they are cast out from their homes and treated as slaves, which in her mind is unfair to anyone. She, like most residents of Old Rose, has a deep distrust of Seventen and she loathes the Bad Brothers for personal reasons.

History

Cass had a hard life from the moment she was born. She was a sickly baby, and wasn’t expected to live long. Against the odds, she recovered, and was the second child her parents had that survived past the age of 10, along with her older brother, Benji. Her family was very poor. Her father was a factory worker and her mother was a seamstress that largely worked out of their meager house. The family were consistently taken advantage of by their galdori landlord, who consistently raised their rent above what their meager income could afford. Her father took on a second job to help with the cost, and her mother also tried to take on more work, however arthritis in her hands made it more and more difficult for her to continue to sew. Cassidy and her brother helped out as well, though they both had very different ways of doing so. Cass was able to find work in a bakery, and Benji, unbeknownst to them at the time, had decided to get involved in crime. This decision on his part would eventually bring more misfortune to the family. He had ended up with a very bad crowd, and this would eventually cost him his life when Cass was in her teens.

Angry about Benji's death, and the authorities’ lack of concern, Cassidy began to get involved in fights. She had always been taller than most, and stronger, and this served her well. Through this, she also kept her job at the bakery, though her employer would eventually let her go as coming in covered in bruises and cuts was not a good look for the business. With this job gone, she eventually started to focus more on fighting for money. It was an excellent way to work out her frustrations, and the cash she gained from it helped take care of her parents. She was unusual for a fighter. She was young, and a girl, but proved time and time again that she could take a hit as well as she could give one, and soon caught the attention of an older brawler named Seamus Gibson, who took her under his wing and trained her to fight better and smarter.

When she was 20, her mother passed away, and her father followed not long after. They had never been the same since Benji had been killed, and Cass maintains that they died of broken hearts. After this, she threw herself more completely into her career as a brawler. At the suggestion of her trainer, she began to fight in the Rose Arena, though she refused to participate in fights to the death. Still, it seemed a good many people wanted to pay to see a human woman built like a brick house beat the stuffing out of all comers, and she was a solid draw. Eventually she earned the moniker "The Bear", which has followed her since. With her parents gone, and her own needs taken care of, she began using some of her winnings to buy food for her neighbors and a collection of street orphans who hung out around where she lived, earning her a reputation around the neighborhood as someone who would help anyone in need. She didn’t want to see anyone have to turn to the same life of crime that led to her brother’s death, and helped anywhere she could.

She knew well that she couldn’t continue her life as a brawler forever, and planned to retire from fighting. She began to put away a good deal of her winnings for the eventuality, which came in handy sooner than she expected when one of her opponents snuck a shiv into a match and stabbed her in the chest. She came away with a punctured lung, and the injury led to her being laid up for several months due to subsequent infections. The same tenacity that pulled her through her illness as a baby seemed to come in handy and pull her through her recovery, though she was left with some permanent damage that led to her getting winded faster than before and made it unwise to continue fighting as she had. She decided to fall back on her knowledge of baking, and used the money she had saved to set up a modest bakery in Castle Hill. She found this return to her roots soothing, and it has helped her heal from the time she had spent living mostly fueled by anger and resentment.

She maintains some connections to her old life, namely to her mentor, who visits her often, and whom she often sends off with parcels of food for the people in her old neighborhood. She still helps anyone who asks her, with some conditions, and is always willing to feed anyone who needs it. She is fiercely protective of those who depend on her and does her part to keep both crooked coppers and criminals from making their lives any harder than they already are.
