Image

.
Race: Galdor (Hoxian)
Birthday: Vortas 37, 2665
Age: 54 (as of Vortas 2719)
FC: Gong Li
Place of Origin: Kzecka, Hox
Current Location: Frecks, Hox
Occupation: Poet, Socialite
Player Name: Maximus
Languages: Deftung (F), Monite (F),
Estuan (F)

Relationships: Ksjta is the mother of Drezda Ecks. Somewhat estranged in recent years, Drezda reached out to her mother in mid-2719 and Ksjta came to provide her daughter with emotional support — in her own way. Since then, the two are in closer contact than they've been in years.

Ksjta also has a connection with Tom Cooke through her daughter, who reached out to her mother about him after learning that he was a raen and had been a human in his first life. While she has some understanding about his nature as a raen, it isn't clear whether she understands the man himself, or if she's willing to see him as more than a curious link to her old life in the Hexxos.

At a glance
  • Height: 5' 2"
  • Hair colour: Black
  • Hair length: Past her shoulders
  • Typical hairstyle: Loose or in various upstyles that conceal her ear tattoos; includes intricate braids
  • Eye colour: Black
  • Tattoos: - Hexxos tattooing over her body that traces her ley lines; some of these lines are visible on her hands
    - Vessel tattooing around the helix of her ears

As a Hoxian galdor, Ksjta is small and lithe like others of her race, standing at 5' 2" but by no means fragile, the poet possessing a fair degree of strength, albeit of the wiry sort. While dancing was never more than a mild interest, the woman has not fallen entirely out of practice and still maintains her unarmed combat training. When she moves, the woman is graceful and light-footed but also quietly confident in her movements, showing that she is not reserved and unobtrusive as women in other kingdoms are often expected to be. That being said, the woman can move quite softly, possibly a result of her time in spaces of the dead where sounds of the living could be jarring. Her motions are usually purposeful and carefully calculated, the woman not expending energy and effort when it isn't necessary.

Many would say that Ksjta Tzacks is a strikingly beautiful woman. The former Hexx is in her fifties but still maintains a youthful appearance, her ivory skin relatively unlined, especially from a distance. Up close, one is able to discern the fine lines around her black eyes and small mouth, as well as faintly visible folds from her nose to the corners of her lips, and etched between her straight brows, which suggest that she can express herself more than her stony face would suggest. One can be forgiven for viewing her stoicism as haughtiness, especially as a tendency of raising her chin and appearing to examine others down the length of her nose from beneath heavy lids. That apparent arrogance best showcases her high cheekbones and strong jawline, as well as the slight hollows in her cheeks, which disappear for those rare few for whom she is willing to display a smile.

The woman has dark hair that falls a few inches past her shoulders when loose and, while she sometimes wears it that way contrary to fashion, it is more likely that she will place it in different upstyles, particularly those that allow her to have some hair loose to conceal the tattooing on her ears. However, she has been known to place her hair in intricate braids in order to facilitate the wearing of a simply decorated vipoxz.

While most of Hoxian society would be unaware what the dark ink ringing the helix of each ear signifies, those in the Hexxos would recognise it as the mark of one who had committed to becoming a Vessel for a raen. She has other less visible and subtle markings that signify the same, as well as the tattooing that all Hexx undergo at a young age that traces their ley lines. Such markings are visible on her hands although she sometimes wears gloves when out and about to hide them from the eyes of the curious.

Ksjta habitually wears loose, wide-legged trousers, which can be mistaken for a skirt, and long-sleeved tunic tops that fasten at the side. Her clothing is usually comfortable but fashionable, the woman favouring materials with organic patterns, in blacks, greys, reds, dark blues and occasionally purples. If she has reason to entertain or attend a gathering, the woman prefers to wear her usual comfortable clothing but can be found wearing silk or satin wraparound dresses and sometimes even fur stoles when the occasion warrants it. On evenings when she doesn't have to concern herself with people other than her family, she can typically be found wrapped in some sort of silken robe, often bearing writing materials and wearing a distracted look.

While she doesn't tend to wear ostentatious clothing, her garments usually bear subtle hallmarks of the wealth that herself and her husband possess.

It would be unusual to find the former Hexx without some manner of cosmetics. While white powder is applied sparingly to even out her face and diminish the signs of nights disturbed by writing and a subtle touch of rouge on her cheeks, the woman favours striking reds for lips and applications of kohl and dark powders to accentuate her eyelids and the corners of her eyes.

Personality

.
Personality NoteShow
The INFP personality type — The Mediator — but with a Hoxian spin. is a good indicator of what Ksjta is like, albeit not perfect.
The former Hexx seems to exhibit perfect rhakor, even managing to remain somewhat stoic in her home life but this emotional control is overcompensation on Ksjta’s part as she is an emotional and sensitive woman. Liable to characterise herself as overly emotional, the poet learned from an early age that she would have to work diligently to keep those parts of herself in check and only allow them to manifest in ways deemed acceptable by Hoxian society. Her strong will and sense of duty to her family and her people has enabled her to maintain her facade, even though it causes her a great deal of pain, something that she has largely dealt with privately, only occasionally sharing such burdens with her husband. She is unerringly courteous, composed and eloquent, and it is rare that her control can be sufficiently shaken to allow something of her true feelings to be exposed. Unfortunately,

The rigidity with which she maintains her emotional control means that she is reluctant to relax it, even when in the presence of her family members, which can make her appear cooler towards them than she truly is. She wasn’t always conscious of this when her children were growing up but when it did occur to her, she considered it to be for the best if she remained somewhat detached as it would allow her to lead by example. Furthermore, she was somewhat afraid that they would pick up bad habits from her, something that she was particularly conscious about in regard to Drezda who shares her emotionality.

Ksjta is guided by her principles and she considers intention to play an integral role in her decision making process. As such, she doesn’t believe that any choice she makes can ever be truly wrong, although hindsight can certainly make them regrettable, especially if she comes to believe that she should have allowed more factors to inform her choices. For instance, she regrets the way that she treated Drezda as a child, realising that her cool attitude towards her daughter would be taken negatively, as she would have felt the same way if their positions were reversed. However, regardless of whether she is to blame for something or not, the woman is prone to self-doubt and the belief that she could have handled a situation better as opposed to differently. Her self-blame can be both unreasonable and illogical.

While the poet can be rather critical of herself as she strives to meet an ideal of which she feels she falls short, Ksjta has many qualities from which those around her benefit. She is fiercely loyal to those she holds dear and considers their well-being to be extremely important, and she always attempts to give them as much of herself as possible. Her loyalty has come to encompass a small number of individuals, not stretching much beyond her family as the woman doesn’t have any truly close friends. While often incredibly lonely, Ksjta feels that such loneliness can only be reduced by sharing the true depths of herself with others and in Hoxian society, she feels that thrusting her passionate nature onto others would unnecessarily burden them.

Caring deeply for those around her, the woman has always done her best to be as open-minded and understanding as possible, keen to empathise with the positions of others. Her connection with others is likely what enables her to touch so many people with her poetic works. She is not only a great observer of people and therefore capable of gaining great insight into others but she is also highly creative, enabling her to communicate with others on a deep level with the metaphors and images that she crafts.

Her creativeness is an integral part of Ksjta Tzacks but it is both a boon and a burden. While it allows her to grow closer to others in many ways, it also pushes her further from them. The woman is prone to deep introspection, inclined to retreat into herself to meditate on some creation or other while forgetting about the world around her. It can make her readily distracted as she usually acts on inspiration as soon as it strikes, which is even the case when it comes to her in her dreams; Ksjta tends to stop whatever she is doing to jot words down, which is one of the reasons why she never strays far pen and paper if she can help it.

.

Racial opinions:

Having grown up within the Hexxos, the poet has particular views about the Cycle and where one might end up within it. She may be a galdor in this Cycle but she knows that she might not have been one in the past and may not be one after she dies and reincarnates — if she reincarnates. Unlike many in Vita, Ksjta knows that the Cycle might be broken upon her death and she might be left as a raen, disembodied and reliant on the demise of others to obtain a vessel for her to live in. As such, she lacks the disdain or disgust that galdori in other kingdoms possess for the so-called ‘lower races’ but it is worth noting that until she went to visit her daughter in Anaxas, Ksjta had never actually encountered a wick or a human before, although she had been known to ply her husband for stories about them.

Everybody dies and the poet believes that each death opens the way to new lives and experiences, and so she thinks that every race offers unique insights into the wider world.

.

Galdori: Ksjta doesn't consider galdori to be the superior race although she is glad to be one. She believes that their access to magic shows a particularly intimate connection with the fabric of the world and the Circle. While their connection may be an enviable one, she has come to believe that it comes with the potential for hubris, something that she thinks is a uniquely galdori challenge.

Wicks: It is undeniable that the union between a galdor and a human dilutes magical ability but it also provides a blending of cultures, while also remaining outside both of them, especially in Hox. Still maintaining a magical link to the world around them, their abilities may be diminished but their relationship with them and the mona is quite different, something that Ksjta believes must provide them with all sorts of experiences, which she couldn't even begin to imagine. Overall, they are a source of fascination for her because she knows comparatively little about them as most people she knows have never actually encountered one.

Humans: As with wicks, her views of humans are rather tolerant, which reflects the general galdori perspective on the lower race in Hox. Being entirely cut off from magical ability, their lives are understandably tied to the land and material realities. She has an interest in human spirituality both in Hox and abroad, and finds Vitanism to be a fascinating religion. Cut off from the Circle and the living presence of the mona, she finds it delightful that they have chosen see connections between themselves and everything around them. She does not view humans and galdori as incompatible in terms of culture, race or religion, but realises that it is for the best that they live such separate lives in Hox. She has great respect for the lives they have managed to carve out for themselves, especially given that they have no magic to aid them even in the most noble of circumstances.

While her husband grew up near to humans and had cause to interact with them at times, still doing so when he returns to his birthplace in Lower Hox, it is worth noting that all of Ksjta's knowledge and experience about humans had been secondhand until she visited her daughter in Anaxas; she has never met a Hoxian human.

Passives: If you had asked Ksjta how she regarded passives when she was younger then she would have said that they were people to be pitied, victims of their ancestors' weaknesses or hubris in slighting the Circle. Furthermore, she imagined that they must have a more harrowing experience than humans in some ways and that they must have their lives shaped by their defects while learning the value of respect and the consequences if it isn't given where it's due — especially to the Circle.

Unlike many people in Hox, she has not only encountered one of the rare magically incapable people but actually has one as a relative: her daughter, Tsia. Having a passive daughter has certainly altered her view about the race. She holds herself accountable for Tsia's condition and while she obviously cannot be responsible for all passives, she feels guilty all the same. She feels that she slighted the Circle spirituality and that Tsia's passivity is her punishment, and while passivity seemed like an abstract concept before that, she now feels that she can relate to the people who bring weakness or punishment to their descendants. Her own guilt makes it more difficult for her to view individuals of this race intellectually through a religious lens. Not having to deal with passives in her proximity secretly brings her relief, which always gives rise to more guilt when she thinks of it. The notion that her elder daughter has kept them as servants and views them as deeply inferior horrifies her but her visit to Anaxas revealed that being near to defective galdori causes her to experience a creeping horror.

As a reminder of her own shame, the woman actually hates the sight of passives and doesn't like them talked about in her presence — not that she'll allow herself to face such a thing openly. Of all the races, passives are the only ones she wishes will have a different incarnation in the next life and that the circumstances that led to their passivity doesn't somehow linger with them going forward.

Raen: As a former Hexx, Ksjta knows about raen and very nearly became a vessel for one — not that she would have known about it. Despite her own rather last minute decision not to become the body for a raen to inhabit, the woman doesn't have anything against them. She is not so naive as to believe that all raen are morally good but the same is true of the typical living. One cannot judge a raen for simply having taken a life because the situation is a complex one. This does not make them biased in their favour, as she believes that not everyone who kills is a cold, heartless murderer. While all of the raen within the Hexxos can be considered 'good', she does not believe that all of them have lived 'good' lives — and wouldn't have expected them to have done so. Even so, such raen live a privileged existence and if she happens to encounter one 'in the wild' then there is much that she is willing to sympathise with as their existences are not easy ones. She considers them to be the richest source of knowledge and would find herself eager to meet them. That being said, she isn't oblivious to the fact that they can be dangerous and if one determined to take over her body against her will then she would not be particularly pleased about the matter and while reluctant to kill one, she believes that she could so.

.
Past & Present History

.
Born in Kzecha to a Hexxos family as the youngest of three, Ksjta was viewed as having the potential to be a future Vessel, her body host to one of the raen that the Hexxos safeguard. An intelligent but grave child, she was surrounded by matters of death from an early age and quickly came to see it as a purely natural occurrence, certainly not something to be feared.

Ksjta proved to have excellent magical aptitude, scoring highly on her initiation test to Frecksat where she began her studies in her 10th year. She chose to focus on Clairvoyant Conversation as it seemed like something that she should do and over time, it became a form of magic that she came to respect and appreciate, continuing her studies in it for more reason than a sense of obligation. From early in her scholastic career, her interests in artistic expression were evident, the girl finding joy in permissible forms of self-expression like poetry and dance, which informed her decision to study arts alongside Clairvoyant magic.

While she flourished academically and spiritually, Ksjta did not fare well socially. She began composing and performing poetry in her later Frecksat years as a method for spiritually enlightening her peers, the young Hexx viewed as somewhat maniacal when it came to the topic of religion. What seemed to be quiet arrogance didn't prove popular with her peers but she always gave the impression of being above it all, already well on the path to her soul's demise — or so she believed.

In her penultimate year, Ksjta met her future husband who was undertaking postgraduate studies at the university. Jaydr Ecks came from a very different background from the young Hexx although they had both grown up around death, albeit Jaydr had played an active role in killing as a hunter in Lower Hox. Incredibly irreligious, Jaydr became a personal project for Ksjta, who determined to turn him to the path of religion through poetry and conversation. His difference proved to be her undoing as she discovered that her discussions with him stimulated and challenged her in ways that she hadn't experienced previously and her lofty intentions fell gradually by the wayside as her fascination with him grew and their relationship evolved into a romantic and sexual one.

In spite of her growing feelings for the man, Ksjta was determined to control her passions, which had always proven too hot for what seemed acceptable for a Hoxian, and so she made her final commitments to become a Vessel, even while her resolve wavered, choosing to offer herself up after her graduation, which she felt would tie things up neatly. The young woman went so far as to have her body ceremonially marked and determined to cut her final ties to life, including bidding farewell to her lover, while the raen who would soon inhabit her body went through the necessary preparations to leave their current Vessel.

Faced with the inevitability of her own death, the young woman couldn't help but view Jaydr as the only real connection to life that she'd ever had, the dangerous streak she had sensed him proving a source of both terror and allure that added colour to a life that she had always experienced in shades of grey — merely a liminal phase. Trying to say goodbye to him proved a far more difficult task than she had anticipated and an unexpected proposal of marriage irreparably damaged her convictions.

When she returned to Kzecka, it was with the news that she could not proceed and that she had agreed to marry a man who by some standards could be classed as a heathen. Thus, her official ties with the Hexxos ended.

Ksjta did indeed choose to marry Jaydr, allowing all to see their devotion to one another but choosing to retain her family name. Her poetry had gained a small degree of notoriety in certain circles and whispers of her origins and her apparent parting with the Hexxos only fuelled interest in her work. While her husband worshipped monetary gain and quietly grew a business that included tendrils outside the once isolated kingdom, the former Hexx settled into her new life, learning to entertain and woo those that her husband interacted with for his business, becoming a moderately accomplished hostess while continuing to compose and recite her poetry, as well as starting a family with Jaydr not long into their marriage. She gained some degree of celebrity for her work, partly due her increasing publications but also courtesy of word-of-mouth from her husband's associates.

While she maintained a career of sorts and also supported her husband, Ksjta also devoted herself to her children, attempting to provide for their needs and invest in their futures. She did her best to instil a love of the arts in her children, encouraging them to express themselves as she had learned to do, which her husband accepted. Her attempts to instruct them in religious matters, especially those pertaining to the soul and the Cycle were less favourably received. She did not put as much effort into this as she could have, allowing such instruction to lapse, something that she later came to regret when her youngest child, Tsia proved to be a passive.

After her daughter tested as a passive and was sent to Frecksat, Ksjta grieved as if the girl had died, a lie that was told to her siblings. Drezda's attitude towards her mother in particular grew increasingly hostile on those occasions when she returned home from her schooling in Anaxas and her mother was let to believe that her daughter had suspicions about her sister's 'death'. Having always considered them to have the closest temperament to one another, the poetess tried to avoid conflict with her remaining daughter as much as possible, which made her appear more outwardly cool towards her while she gave Drezda space. If her son, Rhozdr suspected anything then he kept such thoughts to himself.

Ksjta was left wrestling with an incredible sense of guilt, convinced that her daughter's passivity was a result of her own selfish decisions and that it was retribution for everything from her broken commitment to become a Vessel and her marriage to Jaydr, to her lapse in devotion in not instructing her children properly in religious matters. The woman's poetry composition increased, considering her work to be a form of penance and a way to give more to Hoxian society as a service but with less of the hubris of her schooldays.

Her relationship with her daughter became almost irreparably damaged following her graduation when Drezda used her proficiency in Perceptive Conversation against her mother, utilising it to tear the truth about her sister from her mother's lips. The incident caused a fracture between mother and daughter that lasted for close to a decade with a definite frigidity growing between them, although they never fell out of contact — more due to Ksjta's efforts than Drezda's.

In the following years, Ksjta has done her best to remain in contact with her daughter and follow her career as Hox's diplomat in Anaxas while otherwise keeping her focus within her home kingdom by devoting herself to her husband and son.

Drezda reached out to her mother by letter towards the end of the Rainy Season in 2719 while dealing with issues of alcoholism and a broken heart, while also attempting to come to terms with the knowledge that Anatole Vauquelin is actually the raen Tom Cooke — something which proved deeply upsetting in light of their growing friendship. As of Roalis 2719, the pair of women are on closer terms than they have been since before Drezda attended Brunnhold with Ksjta having come to see her daughter in person in Anaxas, even suffering through the summer heat to provide emotional support to her in person. Since then, she has been keeping in closer contact with her daughter and trying to make up for the years they were emotionally distant from one another.

Occupation

While Ksjta may once have been destined to tend the dead or have her body carry the soul of one of the not-quite departed, she has spent many years providing a different sort of service — in her eyes — Hoxian society. The woman is dedicated to the art of crafting poetry, a skill that has taken years to hone, requiring tireless devotion and labour, which is not unlike what craftsmen and other skilled creatives have had to go through. She has spent a great deal of time studying the compositions of others and traditional poetic structures, as well as learning how to perform her works and translate from Deftung into Estuan without losing the essence of what she originally wrote. She believes that she provides a creative outlet for her own spiritual reflections that is of value to others and has performed readings in public and private spaces for a variety of audiences.

Aside from her work as a poet, which might be classed as an obsession rather than an occupation, Ksjta has also been known to aid her husband in his work by entertaining in their home, which includes private gatherings and those that involve opening the household up to those in the community.

Income: Wealthy/Opulent

Ksjta shares an income with her husband and her son, Rhozdr. She earns a modest income for herself through her work, often choosing to waive off payments in whatever form they may come in favour of allowing the community to benefit from instead, especially as she doesn’t need it. Jaydr has spent many years building up a business that has expanded and diversified, coming to include projects beyond Hox, which Rhozdr also helps to manage, and this business provides most of the family’s income.

Their income fluctuates depending on how their different business interests are faring, but they never struggle for basic necessities and usually have access to plenty of luxuries as well. By the standards of other kingdoms, they would be considered wealthy and possibly even opulent at times, but it is less readily quantifiable in Hox.

While Hoxian galdori tend to be more self-sufficient than their counterparts and there are many things that Ksjta can do for herself, the household still has a servant to carry out a number of tasks, who is a lower-class galdor.

Housing and Inventory

.

Housing

Living in Frecks, Ksjta's home is not the home that herself and Jaydr moved into after their marriage but one that they acquired later, prior to Tsia;s passivity was revealed. The structure is one that is partially carved directly into the mountainside and has a few freestanding rooms built beyond the confines of the mountain. It is large enough to house Ksjta, her husband, and her son and his wife, as well as the family's single servant. It also includes room for more family members — like hoped for grandchildren — as well as cooking and washing facilities, as well as a space that is exclusively for Jaydr and his spinewolf.

The house has a mix of wood or tile flooring with copper piping fitted under tile to provide underfloor heating while the chill of the wood floors is reduced by furs and other floor coverings. Walls either have coverings or have wood-panelling to retain heat and the abode also has fireplaces to help provide comfort in spite of the Hoxian temperatures. The external parts are made of stone and roofed with decorated stone tiles, making greater use of natural light by the inclusion of a number of windows. The rooms carved inside the mountainside receive some natural light by way of carefully placed shafts but they are predominantly lit by oil lamps, particularly in bedrooms, and phosphor lamps, the latter usually placed outdoors during the day to absorb sunlight.

The interior is decorated with artwork — paintings, statues and glassblown pieces — and also boasts a more than modest library, which includes copies of all Ksjta's published works no matter the language.

Inventory

Ksjta has access to a variety of clothing, including formal dresses, casual outfits, and outdoor clothing, including furs courtesy of her husband's trading business within Hox. Aside from clothing, she has access to top quality cosmetics, jewellery and other forms of adornment.

Other items that are exclusively the poet's and important to her work are a variety of religious texts and high quality writing materials. She also has a copies of all of her own works.
