Physical Description

Sam’s general air is best described as “fatherly”. He has short, neatly kept red-brown hair that has started to go salt-and-pepper with age. His hazel eyes are bright and warm, and crinkle at the corners when he smiles. His fair complexion is littered with millions of freckles. He sports a beard and mustache, neatly trimmed and greying like the rest of his hair. His eyes are getting worse with his age, and he requires glasses for reading and working with more delicate machines. He is tall for an anaxi galdor, at just a hair past 5’7’’, and built a bit broader, too. When he was young, he had a decent physique from the hard work he performed as a mechanic on steam- and aeroships, but this has softened with age and the more sedentary lifestyle of a teacher. His style of dress is respectable and suited to a man of his age and position, and he generally favours reds and earthy tones.

Personality

Sam is good natured and kind, with a mischievous streak generally unbecoming of a man of culture and education that he does his best to hide. He is duty bound as a teacher to curb and punish jokes and pranks, but there is always some sparkle in his eye that speaks to a secret desire to let a good one slide. He loves a good joke. He is very paternal, and doesn’t hesitate to help his students, should they be struggling. He largely gives people the benefit of the doubt and tries to see the best in them, though this will occasionally backfire on him. He loves to learn, and he loves to teach. He will never turn down an opportunity to learn something new. He sees his children as his greatest accomplishment in life to date, but does believe that they need to make their own way in the world and will often leave them to figure things out for themselves rather than helping them every step of the way. Within reason, at least.

Sam is generally indulgent to Passives, having spent so long around them in Brunnhold. He is a little wary of them, though, having been party to a few diableries going off in his time. He believes that the lower races are an important part of society and should be treated as such. While not seeing them as equals, he thinks they deserve perhaps a little bit more respect than they get considering their role in keeping everything running smoothly.

Past & Present History

Sampson Morgenstern II was born to Sampson Morgenstern I and Theresa Mabrooke one uneventful summer, and was their second child. His father inherited an importing business, the money from which kept Sam, his older brother Jeremiah, and younger sister Matilda in a very fancy home with fancy servants and fancy clothes. It was at a young age when he discovered he had a knack for machines, often secretly taking his father’s pocket watches, disassembling them, and putting them back together. He would take apart anything he could get his hands on, to the point where his parents refused to buy him clockwork toys. He would collect broken watches and other things to use their parts to attempt to build his own clockworks. None of his early tinkering ever quite paid off, but he never let this discourage him.

The summer before he was to be sent to the Brunnhold, his father took them to see the development that was being done on the new steamships. It was a new thing back then, a marvelous new technology that enthralled young Sampson to no end. He devoured everything he could find on the subject. It was then and there that he decided this was what he was going to do for the rest of his life, to learn how these giant mechanical things worked, to build them, and improve them. And, since his older brother would inherit the family business, he was free to do so.

After completing his education, he spent several years apprenticing on aeroships and steamboats, learning how they worked and how to run and maintain them. He worked with many humans and wicks during this time, and came to respect their abilities and intelligence, also taking the time to learn and understand Tek. He did this for several years before returning to Brunnhold to take up a teaching position as professor of mechanical engineering. It was during this time that he met his future wife, Illiana, a Bastian expert on perceptive magic, who was visiting Brunnhold to give a series of lectures. The two were married young, following a short courtship, and had three children: a set of fraternal twins, Sebastian and Georgianna, and another daughter, Millicent.

Sampson, Illiana, and their two daughters live in Brunnhold. Sam continues to teach intermediate Mechanical Engineering classes. When not teaching, Sam is generally found tinkering with something or spending time with his wife. His son, Sebastian, currently lives and works in Old Rose Harbour, and Sam and Illiana occasionally venture there to visit. Sebastian also frequently comes home to Brunnhold when the weather and his job allow. Sam would love to get to know a train engine, should the opportunity present itself, and is always on the lookout for other opportunities to expand and improve his knowledge and understanding of machines.
