Plot Summary

Underneath all its great lawmakers, Vienda's strings are pulled by those who know its secrets, and those who know how to use them effectively.
One such individual is Genevria Trevisani – a socialite and a widow by day, and by night, madam to Uptown's most elite. Trevisani runs a network of upscale brothels that mainly service politicians and other galdori men of influence. The girls are human, by and large, and hand-picked and -trained by Trevisani.
Her influence runs deep; very little goes on in Uptown Vienda that doesn't pass through Trevisani's awareness, and she has some of its most influential players in her pocket. She is something of an honorary member of The Pendulum Club, and its members make up the bulk of her clientele. Her reach extends even to the High Judge, who owes her more than a small favor. She is also connected (somehow) to the Drain.
A group of Resistance operatives has devoted itself in secret to bringing her down, headed up by Ava Weaver, a shopkeeper and Resistance operative who escaped from Trevisani years ago. The effort was born of an unlikely bond between Ava and Tom Cooke, a raen inhabiting the body of one of Trevisani's influential former clients.
This player-led plot intersects considerably with those Main Chapter plots dealing with the Resistance and the Drain.
Who is Involved?
- Ava Weaver – Shopkeeper and textile merchant by day, Resistance safehouse operative by night, and one of the few young women to have ever gotten away from the Madam. She is determined and patient in equal measure, and her anger at Trevisani and the galdori establishment has burned for a very long time. Practical and cunning, she will stop at nothing to take them down.
- Thomas Cooke – A former human Bad Brother, Tom is a raen who's found himself in the body of Incumbent Anatole Vauquelin, one of Genevria Trevisani's clients – and the politician who kept Ava. After meeting Ava by coincidence, he went after her to find out how and why she knew his host. He became embroiled in a Resistance which does not understand and may never trust him. He is deeply loyal to Ava.
- Genevria Trevisani – The villain. Widowed socialite by day; powerful madam and political influencer by night. Trevisani has much of Uptown Vienda in her pocket.
- Emmie – A mysterious young woman who was rescued from one of Trevisani's houses in 2719. She is of utmost importance to the Resistance, and in Yaris, it was revealed why: she is Azmus' illegitimate parse daughter, and was being kept safe and out of sight by Genevria Trevisani. Her past holds the key to Trevisani's power over Azmus.
- William Azmus – High Judge of Anaxas, Azmus is indebted to Trevisani for safekeeping his illegitimate daughter.
- Anatole Vauquelin – An Incumbent on the King's Council and a former client of Trevisani's; is also a member of the Pendulum. The politician who kept Ava Weaver. He had some information which allowed him to put pressure on Trevisani, but seemingly no one save the madam knows what it is. Deceased, he is currently inhabited by Thomas Cooke.
