DORHAVEN | EARLY MORN
Image
The morning opened up the same as any morning, with the rising of the sun and the waking of the birds. As the sky transitioned from black to blue to tones of pink and green, it was broken up by beautiful soft pastel lavender clouds promising rain later in the day.

It was a perfect morning, so perfect that no one saw what was coming. No one, except a couple of people in The Know. They had taken to moa-back two days prior, realisations sending cold chills down their spines as they rode like Hatchers nipped at their heels for Vienda. They rode to get help, to get to Serro. They rode for family and friends, for young and old, for lovers and enemies. They rode for Dorhaven.

Only, they wouldn’t make it in time.

The freshly-cleared streets of Vienda, were abuzz that morning.

There was no paper that day. This struck most citizens as curious. It was not until noon that the news arrived, with the northern traders and scrying galdori, of a terrible incident in Dorhaven.

Well, the galdori were calling it an "incident." Or an "accident." The human population, however, was using the word "massacre."

Little solid information was getting around. Some people mentioned an explosion, others a demolition; some said that twenty people were killed, some said as many as two hundred were the victim of a cruel attack. The press was completely silent, the target of a gag order from the government, and the Seventen weren't answering any questions either. Regardless, there was a rumour rising in the streets, a word on the lips of people who had heard it from a friend or a friend of a friend. It couldn’t be true, could it?

The Resistance had bombed Dorhaven.

As Serro and a contingent of his followers pounded through backroads only known to Freedom Fighters towards the township, they would see the thick black smoke in the pale blue sky from at least a mile away. They began to smell the acrid combination of chemicals combusting and wood burning and something else. Something sickeningly sweet. Something no-one should ever smell.

Bodies.

The scene was like some sort of horrific nightmare, pieces of blackened or burning buildings thrown far from the town boundary, trees and foilage stripped of their leaves and smouldering in the wake of the explosion. Whatever the cause, the explosion had occurred right in the heart of Dorhaven, just as people had begun their transit to work or play. Humans, wicks and galdori alike were screaming in pain or in fear, clutching the lifeless bodies of those they knew or wandering through the destroyed buildings with shock in their blank dust covered faces. Some galdori were using their Living magic for healing, regardless of race, whilst others were pointing fingers of blame. There was only one group of fanatics vile enough to do this, in a township that was known to be a popular galdori holiday destination. It had to be them, it wasn’t magical in nature. It had to be them.

It had to be the Resistance.

Right?

Gods. The township was nothing more than a burning pile of questions and doubts. Didn’t Serro fight for humanity? For freedom and relief from oppression? As the Seventen who escaped the blast moved through the wreckage, they were kind and almost forged kinship with the fallen. A common occurrence in the face of such an overwhelming tragedy. Opinions were being created, and strange allies.

Do you see now, why we put the Resistance down? Don’t you remember the Riots?

Do you see? We are here for you, and Serro is not.

And so, in a blinding flash of light and heat, of sound and pain, the Massacre of Dorhaven was wrought.
