Image
For the most part, Leo appears to be an unassuming, yet attractive and well-dressed young man. His tousled curls are a rich, dark chocolate shade and his almond-shaped eyes are a warm brown, framed by graceful brows. Though all of his features contribute to his claim to being described as 'handsome', it is certainly his eyes which dominate his appearance. From them comes an intensity, a gentleness and an innocence, alight with curiosity. Leo is easily trusted, for how could such a genuinely virtuous face be anything as abhorrent as a passive? With well-defined cheek and jaw bones, Leo retains many of the features of noble birth, including the pale, yellowish skin of the galdori. But no one pays him enough attention to really look at the similarities anyway, so he passes as wick, just as he would have it.

Diablerie:
This diablerie inflicts rapid, intense, and excruciating pain on sentient beings within a 20ft radius, causing victims to even wish for death, just as an escape to the pain. Prolonged exposure can cause lasting mental injury once the pain has receded.

Personality

Image

Leander is, for lack of a better word, complicated.

Intelligence
Leander has a formidable mind, displaying consummate skill in many different branches of innovation. Unusually cerebral for someone in Ol' Rose, he has extensive knowledge and abilities and possesses a subtle and keenly analytical mind. Priding himself on being exceptionally intelligent and innovative, with a mind for strategy and deduction. A curious mind, he finds his comfort mostly lies in books, valuing logic and cunning above magical or physical power. Leo's most lethal weapons are his cunning wit and infuriatingly silver tongue - which is of benefit, as his light build leaves him at a significant disadvantage in combat. His intelligence, combined with his general cynicism, have turned him into a very pragmatic individual: always taking the quickest, most efficient way out of a problem.

Charisma
On the surface, Leander is a refined, charismatic, cocky and suave individual. Raised on galdori beliefs, he is sophisticated and has consciously maintained those aristocratic qualities throughout his exile in Old Rose Harbour. However, a lifetime of troubles has caused him to develop a bitterly cynical view of the world. A profound misanthrope who appears to have a prominent disdain for almost everyone around him, withdrawn and yearning to be part of something better. He has a need for independence that borders on pathological, and he prefers to operate in solitude whenever possible. As a result, he is remembered by everyone he meets for being selfish, causally cavalier, apathetic and callous. He is an intensely private individual who views emotional displays as a sign of shameful weakness.

Emotional Status
Leander's desperation for something more has created a dedicated hedonist. He enjoys the finer things in life: drinking, gambling and flirting. He knows what it's like to have a habit eat you from the inside: alcoholism... and if he has an awareness of his limitations, he often ignores them.

Leo's belief in his intellectual superiority, coupled with his recklessness, often falls into the realms of audacity. It has been known, in the right conditions, for it to blossom into complete and uninhibited arrogance. This often results in impulsive decisions with very little thought for the consequences. With little sense of morals or responsibility, the results can have disastrous consequences on himself or anyone unfortunate enough to be caught in the crossfire.

During times of great stress and frustration, Leo can become very short-tempered and intolerant of those whom he considers his intellectual inferiors. He is all too willing to write people off as useless, either mocking or berating them, or ignoring them entirely. Additionally, despite Leander's normally calm and controlled exterior and guarded body language, he is in possession of an extraordinarily explosive and almost psychotic temper, especially when experiencing what he perceives as a personal injustice. This is rarely seen, but an extreme display of rage was most prominently witnessed soon after he arrived in Old Rose, when he finally realised his mother wasn't coming back for him.

Under the protective layers exists a lost boy forced into a life he never expected. Leander's residual prejudice towards passives has caused self-hating tendencies: he is suicidal, under-valuing his own life, exacerbated by the overwhelming distress he feels for his low station.

Once destined to be a true ENFJ, a Protagonist if there ever was one, his adult personality could not be the do-gooder. No, it morphed only slightly, but enough to prepare for and protect from a life that would not be easy, becoming an ENTJ: the Commander. ENTJs are natural-born leaders. People with this personality type embody the gifts of charisma and confidence, and project authority in a way that draws crowds together behind a common goal. But unlike their Feeling (F) counterpart, ENTJs are characterised by an often ruthless level of rationality, using their drive, determination and sharp minds to achieve whatever end they’ve set for themselves.

Opinions:
Galdori: Born and raised Galdori, yet abandoned in his formative years, Leo holds very mixed views about his former race. A very large part of him resents, every hates, every single member of the dominant race. Yet... a small part of him cannot quite forget his heritage, and deep down he believes they have the right to the status they hold.

Wicks:

Humans:

Passives: His feelings about passives as just as confused as his feelings about himself. His supremacist views have resulted in a complex

Backstory

Image

Leo wasn’t born during a storm, late at night, or anything that seems to start stories like his. In fact, there was nothing remarkable about the first eleven or twelve years of life, the youngest son of an aristocratic household. He was raised with galdori culture at the heart of everything, growing up without ever questioning his superiority over the other races, for why would his parents lie? With an older brother already educated from home, Leander already had a strong sense of what he wanted to learn, what he wanted to achieve, and how he would one day be renowned. In all things, he wanted to be just like his brother, who in turn strove to follow his mother’s footsteps of physicking.

Kept at home like his brother for reasons that he never cared to ask for, Leander was never tested by officials. Instead, he began education privately. His mother, growing concerned at the lack of... development Leander was showing, when compared to his brother three years earlier. One one quiet afternoon, not far after the boy’s eleventh birthday, the woman tested him in secret. He failed.

Image
Nothing happened immediately. For a blissful month, Leo even began to think he had dreamed the failure: his family treated him normally, and his mother never mentioned it. He continued to study hard, every bit curious and desperate to devour the information dangled in front of him, a hope for the future he was soon to lose.

To describe his disappearance as a flight from the city would be unfair, nor accurate to even describe it as a smuggling operation. His mother, in full view of anyone who cared to pay attention, took Leander from the city limits, citing an educational excursion as her reason. By steam ferry they travelled to Old Rose Harbour. There Leo, blissfully ignorant until he followed his mother into a bookshop (the Attic), felt his world crash down around him. He realised the galdor had brought him here with every intention of leaving him behind. Something inside Leander crumpled that day, and something else was erected in its foundations. Galdori-raised, the boy was more innocent than most. What parent would ever wish such a horrible fate on their child, what parent would ever think to prepare their child for the worst? He knew little of passives (other than to despise and fear them), nor their expected fate if branded with a tattoo on their bicep, he was not aware of their gated lives, carefully monitored by the proud race he once belonged to.

It wasn’t until years later that the fate Leo escaped was explained to him, and he spent years festering in his resentment for a mother who abandoned him. How could he appreciate the gift she gave him when he knew no better? Instead, he seethed, barely taking advantage of the unique opportunity arranged by his mother. She left a the bookseller with enough funds to provide an apprenticeship for her son, who was already literate and had shown passion for learning. At least here, learning a scribe’s trade, her son had a chance to read that which he recorded and restored. And the boy did, to an extent. He remained for eight long years after that day she left him, a sobbing and begging child. Earning pittance, he worked as required, slowly coming to terms with his fate. Something he still couldn’t accept, however, was his own status as a passive - it was something he never admitted aloud and, because no one really paid him much mind, he never bothered to correct those who saw him as a wick.

But over those years, though nothing of note happened (he did his work quietly, even sometimes forging for Brothers on occasion, and paid dues to the King of the Underworld), and he attracted no attention from anyone of import. Leander’s once bright and curious light had faded to something that defined him. He was bitter and resentful towards everyone and everything, including himself. He resented the dreams he once knew would be true, he resented his difficulty in in assimilating to his new lifestyle, he resented everyone around him for not knowing the utter despair and desperation of scrambling to breathe in a world where mediocrity was the best he could ever hope for.

Image
Desperation drives people to do extraordinary things: it separates the average from the spectacular. Leander was the former. Instead, he became impulsive, careless. Still not enough to draw attention to himself, but the debauchery, womanising, and use of etiquette lessons in a way his mother never could have imagined, was enough to have wake up one morning realising he had a larger debt than that which he could pay off.

Leander’s story didn’t begin on a stormy night, but there was every chance it would end on one.
