The Attic
Image

City, Kingdom : Old Rose Harbour, Anaxas
Description : Bookshop with scribing and counterfeiting services

Owned By/Run By : Resha Farrow (Silas Hawke)
Description
Image

With enough money walking through the doors each day, the Attic met Hawke’s taxes and had enough left over to maintain all aspects of the business with ease. It was not a building in ruins, early cared for. If anything, Resha, the owner, clearly took pride in the appearance of his shop, and the condition of his books. Many of his apprentices over the years shared this pride and, as long as he kept up the healthy stream of coins to line Hawke’s pockets, the city did not mind.

Behind the scenes, where the more lucrative aspects of the business were carried out, the building was just as clean. Stacks of paper lined shelves in what could only be described as disordered order. Inkpots, wells and pens, wax, stamps, burners, all lined up neatly in a system only workers seemed to understand. Upon closer inspection, a customer might be amazed at the sheer variety: the blank papers were different colours, thicknesses, some were coarse, others soft to the touch. Even the inks, were one to pour them out on the desk, had different consistencies. This was because Resha, with all his wisdom, knew that no two nations were alike. Legal documents created in Anaxas would look different to those from another kingdom, and the choice of paper could make all the difference between a forged document passing as real or not. There was even a difference between cities in a single kingdom.

The work produced by Resha was meticulous, and his apprentices were given extensive training too. Not everyone was allowed to see the room, but those who did would leave safe in the knowledge that the forgery would pass even the most scrutinous inspection.

History/Context
Image
The bookshop, known as The Attic, was a rare find in Old Rose Harbour. Not that it was hidden down some dark alleyway, or nondescript so as not to draw attention from passers-by. On the contrary, the doorway stood obvious and proud on one of the busier streets of the city. The main reason for the bookshop’s secret existence was because, in Ol’ Rose, finding a man or woman who could read anything at all was sometimes a difficult task. As a result, most people who stumbled upon the unassuming door found it worthless and an utter waste of time. On the other hand, it saw enough profit, as was evident from the upkeep of the store. A generation ago, the various crime syndicates of the Harbour sought to control it for that reason alone, and not now rested fully in the grasp of Silas Hawke.

But the money earned by the store did not come from books it lent out or sold, nor the bookbinding services - in fact, the latter was a hole down which the owner would throw money. Some income was from scribing or reading services: illiterate citizens would seek out the educated workers to meet their needs, or important documents and books would be copied or worked over by the skilled hands of an apprentice. Most of the money would come from more lucrative endeavours. The shop saw a relatively steady stream of customers needing documents and papers created… forged.

The store was a front - a tradition of maintaining face from a time when crime lords did not rule the city. It was no secret that counterfeiting was a service offered, and very few who entered even bothered to pretend to be interested in the books. But it was tradition, and the owner insisted on it.

NPCs List
Name: Resha Farrow
Race: Wick
Age: 47
Gender: Male
Title: Owner
Info: People who meet Resha say that he his an open book. Yet, how could the Attic have such a lucrative business and the owner not have an equally mysterious private life? He is known for his intelligence and reserved behaviours, preferring to watch and learn rather than act. It is said he stored secrets about people that they don’t even know about themselves, all from watching and observing alone. There are plenty of reasons for the man to be considered dangerous, and this was one of them. But it was difficult not to be drawn in by his almost fatherly nature. Many wondered whether that, too, was a front, or if he was genuinely concerned for the wellbeing of others.

==Services Offered==
While The Attic is indeed a well-curated bookshop on the surface, those who know what to ask for can also purchase Resha's forgeries.
