The Cafeteria
Orthosophos cheerfully told Madeleine about his father, who was an engineer – or an inventor? Madeleine wasn’t exactly sure, listening, and nor, she realized, was she really sure what the difference was. There were a lot of people in her static conversation classes who liked machinery and that sort of stuff, but she didn’t, really; actually Madeleine found all the oil and stuff kind of gross, and she couldn’t really imagine wanting to touch it.

But Orthosophos seemed to think it was interesting, anyway. “A steam-powered automatic comb?” Madeleine asked, eyes wide and mouth slightly open. She reached up to touch her hair, a little worried, trying to imagine an automatic comb running repeatedly through it. It sounded really awful; she thought it would probably hurt if it found a snarl or pulled too hard or anything like that.

Or was a comb some sort of machine? That is, not the sort of one used for combing hair, but some other sort of – comb? Madeleine couldn’t really imagine, anyway, why a hair comb would be on rolling spikes.

It would, she thought a little longingly, make it easier not to have to brush one’s hair so many times every night. Madeleine tried very hard to remember to brush her hair enough strokes every night, but it didn’t really seem to help. She felt rather strongly than an automatic brush would be better than an automatic comb, that is, if they were talking about automatic hair machines.

“Oh,” Madeleine said, when Theodore said his mother was a banker. She shifted a little, looking down at her plate. He’d practically finished his food, Madeleine realized, and she still had most of her tart left. She picked up her fork again, and prodded at it.

“Um,” Madeleine said, in answer to his question. Of course, there were lots of Incumbents and lots of Incumbents’ kids at Brunnhold. Sometimes, people were strange about it; sometimes they were nicer to her than they’d been before, and she thought that was all right, because at least they weren’t mean. Sometimes, though, people laughed or said – other mean things, which she didn’t like. His mother might know her mother, Madeleine thought, but she found she didn't want to know if they did.

“They’re in government,” Madeleine said, and shrugged. Shrugging wasn’t a proper ladylike thing to do, and she felt dreadful about it immediately, as if Orthosophos would immediately know she was trying to change the subject. Hastily, Madeleine stabbed her fork into the tart, looking at the other student.

“What other inventions has your dad made?” Madeleine asked. She thought of a better question then and went on, steadily, into it, even though they didn’t make very much sense together. “Do you want to be an engineer too?” She took a forkful of the tart and put it in her mouth immediately; nobody, she felt sure, would ask her questions while she was eating, and then she’d be all right.

Cafeteria
The Government. Theodore was not specially interested in politics, but he remembered having met the daughter of another incumbent. What was the name of that girl with the book? Well, anyway, she was an acquaintance at most, so it would be pointless to mention her to Madeleine.

"Umm hum...", he nodded, munching the last mouthful of his meal.

He made a vague gesture when Madeleine asked him about his father's other inventions, meaning there were many. Most prototypes did not end up built in full size, and his father just said they were useless, but Theodore liked to keep them, just in case one day he found an innovative way to use them that would change society forever...

"Yes, being an engineer is the most reasonable way to earn a life for me", he replied. "I could benefit from my father's experience and... well, with the conversations I have specialized on...", he trailed off, apparently more interesting in picking all the lettuce leaves he had dropped before.

"The alternative would be exploring the world and living adventures", he commented, standing up and looking for a basket to get rid of his garbage, "but it would be unrealistic", he added, grinning with a raised eyebrow.

"Well, I'm afraid I have an essay to write", he told her with a sad smile. "See you in the classroom?"

Madeleine thought she must have done something wrong, though she didn’t know what. Orthosophos didn’t answer her first question, just sort of gesturing, and then stared down at his plate, pushing his salad leaves around. Madeline took another bite of her tart, hoping he wouldn’t ask her any other questions about her family.

He said something about exploring, already standing, and then said he had to go.

“Oh,” Madeleine said, looking down at her half-empty plate. “Um, yes, of course. See you in class.”

She sat there a few more moments after Orthosophos had left. It was hard to decide, but Madeleine thought being left alone to finish her lunch wasn’t as bad as coming to the cafeteria alone. She prodded at the tart with her fork, and took one last bite.

Then, with a little sigh, Madeleine took her tray to the return, and made her way back out into the cold. She would have to go back to her room for her things, she thought, making her way there. She felt very tired still, though not as much as she had before lunch.

It had been, Madeleine felt, a very strange morning and early afternoon, but not quite a bad one. Some parts had been upsetting, other strange, and some of it had been - well - fun. Even though it was cold as she walked back alone to her room, even though she had a lingering feeling that she had made some mistake asking Orthosophos the question she had, Madeleine smiled as she went through the snowy paths of campus.

Maybe, she thought, maybe - maybe! - this year would be better than the last. It shouldn’t have been so hard to imagine - last year, mostly the second term, had been really, truly awful. It was, a little, still; the start of the morning hadn’t helped. But it had ended well, or at least well enough, after all; Madeleine thought maybe it was all right to hope.

From the Cafeteria to the Dormitiry
A wide smile spanned on Theodore's face from ear to ear. He could not be happier with the current day: he had made a new friend who was neither mad nor psychopath - which was something hard to find among the teenagers studying in Brunhold and beyond -, but she was kind and funny. He had never enjoyed homework so much, with so many unexpected experiments and shared experiences. Alone, he would have finished much earlier, but with Madeleine he had learned hidden aspects of the physical conversation that he would not have considered on his own. Her point of view was complementary to his and allowed him to understand Mona in a deeper way.

Theodore sneezed. After noisily cleaning his nose, he shook his head and sped up. He had been pacing oblivious to the cold, lost in his thoughts.

Once back in his room, he deployed his writing utils on the desk and started elaborating his essay, committing to paper his thoughts about the text in the book, the experiments they had performed and the results they had obtained. He did not avoid mentioning that he had been working in collaboration with another student, but made emphasis on that, explaining that working in pairs provided another point of view and postulating that peer reviews should be mandatory in any serious study to detect mistakes before publishing.

Next day, he would not bring a handkerchief to class, but two... just in case.
