Character Name: Tom Cooke
Aptitude Skills Used: Social
Focus Skills Used: Professional (Political Figure)
Income Tier: Wealthy

Advancement Request Thread List(s):

Aptitude: Social – Good to Excellent:
  1. Some Kind of Nightmare
  2. Keep the Streets Empty for Me
  3. Glukupikron
  4. [M] I Don't Feel Like Dancing
  5. Whiskey, You're the Devil
  6. [Main Chapter] Kingsmeet

Justification: in the first three, he's using a mix of slang and Tek; in the latter three, he's chosen to adopt upper class speech/mannerisms (sometimes faultily). They're mostly not chronological. Primarily, these are threads which show that he's becoming capable of adapting his behavior and his performance of social class to his circumstances and company.

Focus: Professional (Political Figure) – Beginner (New Skill):
  1. All I Know Is— (S)
  2. Whiskey, You're the Devil
  3. [Main Chapter] Kingsmeet

Fake it 'til you make it get real good at fakin' it. Or somethin' like that, hey?

She demonstrates (and refines) her ability to smooth over tense and uncomfortable situations throughout them all.

by Tom Cooke

Character Name: Tom Cooke
Aptitude Skills Used: Mental
Focus Skills Used: Criminal (Professional), Mimic (Professional), Scrapping (Combat)
Income Tier: Wealthy

Advancement Request Thread List(s):

Aptitude Skill - Mental (Excellent to Master)
  1. This Beautiful Complexity (Dead)
  2. Offerings to the Dead
  3. No Surrender
  4. All I Know Is (S)
  5. The Tools We Have
  6. My Least Favorite Life
At its heart, Tom's character is about thinking -- thinking deeply, thinking a lot, thinking creatively. He doesn't always make the best choices, but he's working overtime mentally to deal with the things that (un)life is throwing at him, and he's developing in a lot of different directions. He's also shown himself capable of holding onto his mind (& holding onto his body with his mind) in very metaphysically dangerous, overwhelming situations. He needs every bit of mental resourcefulness he can get, because it's all he's got.

Focus Skill - Professional: Criminal (Proficient to Expert)
  1. [Memory] Hands Grasping Tight
  2. [Memory] Never to Let Go
  3. [Memory] One of the Few Good Memories
  4. [Memory] If I Should Call You Home
  5. [Memory] Homo Homini Lupus Est (Dead)
  6. [Memory] The Roots
  7. Keep the Streets Empty for Me
  8. The Tools We Have
All of these are threads where Tom exhibits criminal skills or knowledge -- whether it's a memory thread and he's on the job, or he's using contacts/resources from his criminal past, or he's using his criminal experience to navigate a situation in the present day that's not entirely on the up and up.

Focus Skill - Professional: Mimic (New Beginner Skill)
  1. [Main Chapter] Kingsmeet
  2. No Surrender
  3. My Least Favorite Life

Focus Skill - Combat: Scrapping (New Beginner Skill)
  1. [Memory] Hands Grasping Tight
  2. [Memory] Never to Let Go
  3. [Memory] There Might Come a Day (Dead)
In life, he fought a lot, and he fought any way he could, with his fists or with a knife; he was no martial artist, but he learned how to gain an advantage. He was no stranger to hair-grabbing or a knee to the groin. Tom still knows how to throw a punch, theoretically, but hopefully that poor Physical Aptitude speaks for itself. Still, if he gets into a fight with an elderly librarian...

by Niccolette Ibutatu

Character Name: Niccolette Ibutatu
Aptitude Skills Used: Mental, Social
Focus Skills Used: Living Conversation, Duelist
Income Tier: Wealthy

Advancement Request Thread List(s):

Mental (Excellent to Master):
1. Close to Your Chest
2. Unyielding (S)
3. Eye of the Storm
4. Never to Let Go
5. Bury Me Face Down
6. Where it Hurts

Justification: These threads involve a mix of mental skills, including a lot of magic, some implied studying and/or research (Close to Your Chest, Unyielding, Eye of the Storm, Never to Let Go, Where It Hurts), a fighting style that involves extensive analysis of one's opponents (Never to Let Go, Bury Me Face Down), and even some leadership (Eye of the Storm). Niccolette also displays an impressive ability to concentrate in various situations, including high-pressure ones (Eye of the Storm, Never to Let Go, Bury Me Face Down).

With the increase in mental skill, I'd also like to give Niccolette broken Gioran as a language.

Social (Average to Good):
1. Close to Your Chest
2. Unyielding (S)
3. Never to Let Go
4. Vengeance is a Cold Thing (S)
5. Bury Me Face Down
6. My Least Favorite Life

Justification: Niccolette's social skills are, perhaps, somewhat unorthodox. She certainly socializes a lot, whether making friends at Brunnhold (Close to Your Chest, Unyielding), and has the ability to get by, albeit with mixed success, in galdori high society (Bury Me Face Down, My Least Favorite Life). Her favorite social skill, of course, is intimidation, and she uses her field and her magic to considerable success in a variety of situations (Never to Let Go, Vengeance is a Cold Thing). Although not as subtle and nuanced in her social interactions as some, Niccolette manages to get by in Brunnhold, the Rose, on a pirate crew, and in high Viendan society, suggesting at least some social acuity.

Living Conversation (Intermediate to Advanced):
1. Close to Your Chest
2. Unyielding (S)
3. Eye of the Storm
4. Hands Grasping Tight
5. Never to Let Go
6. Vengeance is a Cold Thing (S)
7. The Dead Man's Wife
8. Bury Me Face Down
9. Where it Hurts
10. Wicked Game

Justification: Casting is central to Niccolette's identity; although she perhaps relies a bit heavily on conquest, she approaches magic seriously and cautiously (as an adult), and with reverence for the mona. Although demanding, she is also respectful, and a creative and often vicious castor. These threads take her from basic anesthesia spells (Close to Your Chest) and Brunnhold dueling (Unyielding) in 2707 all the way to a high-level duel against another intermediate castor (Bury Me Face Down) and bringing someone back from the brink of death to something resembling health in a single night (Wicked Game) in 2719. She uses a range of impressive spells, whether breaking legs (Hands Grasping Tight), numbing a tongue from a great distance (Eye of the Storm) or stopping a miscarriage (Wicked Game). She often does her best to push her limits, such as with advanced state manipulation spells, sometimes successfully (Hands Grasping Tight) and sometimes unsuccessfully (The Dead Man's Wife). Her backlash in 2015 (Hands Grasping Tight) shapes her as a castor, and teaches her to get what she wants using subtle spells as well as brute force (Never to Let Go, Vengeance is a Cold Thing, Bury Me Face Down). During the twelve years of casting covered by these threads, Niccolette casts a range of living spells, from healing (Vengeance is a Cold Thing, Wicked Game) to anesthesia (Close to Your Chest, Hands Grasping Tight, Bury Me Face Down) to adrenaline (Eye of the Storm, Vengeance is a Cold Thing) to control (Bury Me Face Down) to enhancement (Hands Grasping Tight) to nervous spells (Bury Me Face Down) to state manipulation spells (Hands Grasping Tight, The Dead Man's Wife) an impressive variety of spells that do physical damage (Unyielding, Eye of the Storm, Hands Grasping Tight, Never to Let Go, Bury Me Face Down, Where it Hurts). Overall, Niccolette has done a lot of magic!

Duelist (Beginner to Proficient):
1. Unyielding (S)
2. Eye of the Storm
3. Hands Grasping Tight
4. Never to Let Go
5. Bury Me Face Down
6. Where it Hurts

Justification: Some of these threads involve explicit duels following either Brunnhold Lawn rules (Unyielding) or traditional dueling (Bury Me Face Down), but they all involve casting against other active spellmakers, whether wick (Never to Let Go, Where it Hurts) or galdori (Eye of the Storm, Hands Grasping Tight). This skill is designed to capture that aspect of her combat proficiency - a sort of specialization in fighting other magic users.
