by Ava Weaver

Character Name: Ava Weaver
Aptitude Skills Used: Mental
Focus Skills Used: Healer, Business Owner
Income Tier: Poor

Advancement Request Thread List(s):

Mental (Good to Excellent):
1. No Surrender
2. The Tools We Have
3. For my next trick...
4. Summer Nights
5. Cadenza
6. Tea and Tension

Justification: In these threads, Ava demonstrates a range of mental skills. She has little in the way of formal education, but has undertaken a good deal of self-teaching over her lifetime, and continues to do so. She uses her mind to think her way through a variety of difficult situations (The Tools We Have, Cadenza), practices her skills as a translator (Tea and Tension), does her best to understand the soul (No Surrender), helps plan with other resistance operators (For my next trick...) and studies living conversation in the hope of using that knowledge against her enemies (Summer nights).

With the increase in mental skill, I'd also like to advance Ava's knowledge of Tek to fluent.

Mimic (New Skill):

1. What we now know
2. Misdirected
3. No Surrender

Justification: Ava has always had something of a knack for imitating others. With this request, I'd like to formalize that into an actual skill. As a child in the Rose, she imitated neighbors, wicks, and unfortunately dangerous galdori (What we now know); as an adult, she remembers these skills (Misdirected) and even helps Tom Cooke learn to wear the mask of Anatole Vauquelin (No Surrender).

Income Tier (Poor to Average):

1. Summer 2717: Welcome to the Neighborhood
2. Spring 2719: Keep Your Secrets
3. Rainy Season 2719: Souls and Silk

Justification: Ava works hard as a shopkeeper, including these three threads across different seasons; in each, she sells fabrics to a character (PC or NPC) written by another player.

Character Name: Uzoji Ibutatu
Aptitude Skills Used: Social
Focus Skills Used: N/A
Income Tier: Wealthy

Advancement Request Thread List(s):

Social (Good to Excellent):
1. Uncertain Citations
2. To Have and to Hold
3. All Hands on Deck
4. Eye of the Storm
5. The Waves
6. A Little Longer

Justification: Uzoji made considerable use of social skills, both in his work and personal life. Whether undertaking a conversation with a certain Gioran whose relationship with his then-girlfriend was unclear (Uncertain Citations), surviving an awkward early fight with his wife and cheerfully attending dinner afterwards (To Have and to Hold) , managing his crew against various uncertainties (All Hands on Deck, Eye of the Storm), sweet-talking his way through over-protective humans and an injured galdor (The Waves) or soothing a matron and a scared young passive (A Little Longer), Uzoji has consistently navigated his way through a variety of complex social situations.

by Aremu Ediwo

Character Name: Aremu Ediwo
Aptitude Skills Used: Physical, Social
Focus Skills Used: N/A
Income Tier: Average

Advancement Request Thread List(s):

Physical (Good to Excellent):

1. Heart of Stone (S)
2. All Hands on Deck
3. Eye of the Storm
4. The Waves
5. Heavy Heart to Carry
6. Give up on the Light

Justification: Aremu has always enjoyed physical pursuits, although his small size makes him more of an acrobat than a strongman. As a boy, he was active, and particularly loved to climb (Heart of Stone), and set what would become a lifelong pattern of using physical pursuits to find emotional solace and strength (Give Up on the Light). During his time on the Eqe Aqawe, his strength and physical abilities were an important part of his work (All Hands on Deck, Eye of the Storm, The Waves). Even since, as a Bad Brother, he is called on to use his strength and fighting abilities (Heavy Heart to Carry). Overall, even with only one articulated hand, Aremu is strong, flexible and capable.

Social (Poor to Average):

1. The Waves
2. Never Close the Door
3. The Worms Will Come
4. Give up on the Light

Justification: Aremu is his own worst enemy when it comes to social skills. He has good social awareness, but has a hard time getting out of his own head and engage with others. All the same, whether trying to make a connection with someone (The Waves, Never Close the Door, Give Up on the Light) or recruit a new Bad Brother with minimal bloodshed (The Worms Will Come), Aremu's life does demand that he practice his social skills, and lets him (slowly) improve.

by Aremu Ediwo

Character Name: Aremu Ediwo
Aptitude Skills Used: N/A
Focus Skills Used: Engineer
Income Tier: Average
Language Skills: Tek

Advancement Request Thread List(s):

Engineer (to Beginner):

1. Silent Flaming Arcs of Hope (S)
2. The Waves
3. The Spotlight is On

Justification: Although Aremu's job on the Eqe Aqawe was primarily a mechanic, he also has engineering skills. Whether discussing the rewiring of the ignition sequence (Silent Flaming Arcs of Hope), understanding machine schematics to fix an aetherium processing facility (The Waves) or designing his own custom tools (The Spotlight is On), Aremu demonstrates an understanding of machines and machinery beyond just their repair.

Tek (to Broken):

1. Never Close the Door
2. Deep Waters

Justification: Through his, uh, friendship with Tom Cooke in the summer of 2716, Aremu had the occasion to pick up a considerable amount of Tek, learning a good deal of basic vocabulary.

by Niccolette Ibutatu

Character Name: Niccolette Ibutatu
Aptitude Skills Used: N/A
Focus Skills Used: Medic, Living-Focused Quantitative Conversation, Negotiator
Income Tier: Wealthy

Advancement Request Thread List(s):

Medic (N/A to Beginner to Proficient):

N/A to Beginner
1. Vengeance is a Cold Thing (S)
2. The Dead Man's Wife
3. Where it Hurts

Beginner to Proficient
1. Wicked Game
2. If Ever You Needed Someone
3. Heavy Heart to Carry
4. All of This Turbulence
5. I Never Dream of You
6. Shattered

Justification: Niccolette is decided not a doctor, and she is not qualified to practice as one in Anaxas (or anywhere else). That said, thanks to her training in living conversation at Brunnhold, and a considerable amount of real world practice, she is in fact a skilled healer. I use the term medic to indicate something of a focus on combat-related injuries, as well as to differentiate her from being a doctor. In these threads, she demonstrates a range of healing abilities - not, unfortunately, always successful or always (often) pain free, especially with her earlier attempts. These skills include both magical (the majority of threads) and non-magical treatment (such as, for example, Where it Hurts), including a variety of spells (both direct healing and support of other healers, as in Shattered). Over time, Niccolette has grown more sophisticated in her use of healing spells, and can even heal more gently - when she wants to.

Living-Focused Quantitative Conversation (N/A to Elementary)

1. Hands Grasping Tight
2. Where it Hurts
3. Wicked Game
4. The Dead Man's Wife
5. If Ever You Needed Someone
6. Heavy Heart to Carry

Justification: The skill I request here is not quantitative conversation, but specifically quantitative conversation as it relates to living conversation, i.e. asking questions to the mona related to bodies (whether dead or alive), with a focus towards healing or other manipulations. Niccolette learned some of these spells at Brunnhold, but, IC, started to focus more on learning such spells following the events (including a rather spectacular failed quantitative spell) in Hands Grasping Tight. In general, she uses these spells to supplement healing spells (Hands Grasping Tight, Wicked Game, If Ever You Needed Someone) or spells with intent to harm (Where it Hurts) or for other, more specialized uses, such as determining how dead someone is (The Dead Man's Wife) or finding a swallowed object (Heavy Heart to Carry).

Negotiator (Beginner to Proficiency)
1. Never to Let Go
2. Vengeance is a Cold Thing (S)
3. Where it Hurts
4. The Worms Will Come
5. These Golden Ashes Turn to Dirt
6. Dead Ringer (S)

Justification: Negotiation is perhaps a generous or, uh, euphemistic way of describing Niccolette's people-related skills, but I use it to refer to get ability to get information or concessions from people, whether through intimidation (Never to Let Go, Vengeance is a Cold Thing, Where it Hurts), manipulation (The Worms Will Come), actual torture (These Golden Ashes Turn to Dirt) or, occasionally, softer social skills (Dead Ringer). Her work with the Bad Brothers - particularly after Uzoji's death - has provided her with ample opportunity to practice these skills.

by Tom Cooke

Character Name: Thomas Cooke
Aptitude Skills Used: N/A
Focus Skills Used: Monite (Language), Mugrobi (Language)
Income Tier: Wealthy

Advancement Request Thread List(s):

Monite (Broken to Conversational)
Tom has been studying Monite fairly diligently, and it shows. He now knows the language well enough to follow along with Ezre's warding spell in chorus, and has actually successfully cast a spell, albeit with a grimoire and a lexicon at his elbow.

Mugrobi (New - Broken)
Tom can't hold a conversation in Mugrobi, but through his brief visit to the Isles, the shifting of the Symvouli Cycle, and his friendship with Aremu Ediwo, he has learned the fundamentals of pronouncing Mugrobi words and has a little vocabulary/cultural context, though he has no grasp of syntax or morphology.

by Tom Cooke

Character Name: Thomas Cooke
Aptitude Skills Used: None
Focus Skills Used: Clairvoyant Conversation (Magic)
Income Tier: Wealthy

Advancement Request Thread List(s):

Clairvoyant Conversation (New - Elementary)
  1. Offerings to the Dead
  2. Make the Best of Death (S)
  3. A Rose to the Living
  4. To Doubt
  5. Inhale All You Speak
  6. In Transit
While utilizing Clairvoyant-related skills very differently, all six of these threads either introduce or develop a skill related either to warding or ley channels. Offerings to the Dead is Tom's first exposure to Clairvoyance; while he doesn't cast, Ezre teaches him to focus his mind and clear a vestibule with the use of a crystal. In Make the Best of Death, he approaches the mona and casts a ward - successfully.

In A Rose to the Living, he casts the same ward in chorus with Ezre. In To Doubt and Inhale All You Speak, he continues to use self-warding for meditative purposes; in the latter, he fails, refocuses himself, and casts again. He also explains to Aremu Ediwo coherently how warding works. It's hinted in both threads (and elsewhere) that he self-wards and meditates regularly, with mixed success and frequently exhausting failure.

Book-ending what Offerings started, in In Transit, Tom is the willing, participating recipient of Ezre's spell, and capable/studied enough in his own right to hold his end of the channel.
