During Vortas, the school year was beginning to get hectic from the advent of exams, tests, and graduation of the upper forms. Soon it'd be Winter Break, but that didn't mean the students were left to slack, meandering toward their own devices. No, it meant long nights spent at practicum, independent study, and a lot of reading. Yet not all was lost to the business of the year's end.

Pleasance had just reached the age of 16 and was well on her way into the upper Forms. She'd just enjoyed her first year with the privacy of a single room, all to herself. Of course, the bathing area was shared, but nobody seemed to mind or make it difficult. They were all too tired by the time they awoke or got ready for bed. Too tired to pester each other about what had become a mere routine fact of life.

Since she'd just had her birthday, her parents dutifully sent her singular gifts to commemorate the occasion. Of course, they didn't bother to send for her, to bring her home during the break. No, not with Winter Break so close. They could congratulate her on sixteen years of surviving when it was damned well convenient.

There were two gifts Pleasance received, one from her mother a pneumatic switchblade disguised as a hair clip. And another from her father, a fashionable shawl and bowler hat. Her father probably had been pressured by her mother to buy her something like that. Since he probably hadn't the faintest idea what her dress size was, it appeared he decided to phone it in with one-size-fits-all options. Pleasance didn't mind though, she could make it work. Maybe send a thank-you note when she got back from a night out on the Stacks.

She and some nameless schoolmates were going out on the town, chaperoned by one of the Ninth Forms. There, to have some fun and blow off steam at a dance hall that lies beyond the walls of the school grounds.

It was a cool night, so the velvet shawl might actually see some use. She wrapped it around her street outfit, a simple tweed blouse, and a skirt, with boots and hose. Pulling some gloves on, she set out to the Dormitory common room, where the rest of the students were awaiting their chaperone.

They were led outside the grounds of the school. Pleasance for her part kept to herself mostly, a bit shy and embarrassed that nobody seemed to realize it was her birthday. Most of her fellow classmates were granted wealthy allowances, and often singled her out as a upstart, with her much less impressive getup and belongings. Pleasance didn't mind this, it just motivated her that much more to try and prove that she could rise above those who were coddled with wealth.

The students made some noise moving through the streets, disturbing sleeping workers in their tenements as they roved through the Stacks. Several of the more rambunctious of her fellow sixth forms were crowing at the top of their lungs, laughing and joking with each other with little regard for the comfort of the resident humans and wicks.

Before an hour-long walk was done, they all arrived at the dance hall. It was really more of a bar, or perhaps something of a club, or an all-purpose watering hole for people of any stripe to gather. Once inside, everyone seemed to find a partner. Before Pleasance knew it, seconds passed and she was left the odd girl out, with nobody to dance with as the rest of her classmates had fun on the floor.

So, she supposed she'd wait her turn, and stand by the wall, waiting for someone to approach her. She crossed her arms, pouting as she watched everyone in her class having fun except for herself.

8 Vortas, 2716

During Vortas, the Stacks went through slow days and incredibly busy days. When the students behind the red-brick walls were busy with classes, things went on usually with the residents of the neighborhoods and the tourists and visitors who came through the city. But on the ninth and tenth days of the week, the Stacks filled to the brim with young gollies looking to get away from their studies and have fun. It was the busiest, and most profitable, time for the segmented college town.

Meraki didn't sleep during the ninth and tenth days of the week. He usually spent the second and third days passed out because of it, but for the ninth and tenth... he was on his feet, working, from sun-down on the eighth until sun-up on the first day of the new week. The wick, well into his 19th year of age, didn't bother with gigs on these nights. There was the occasional prime set-up or opportunity, but this week wasn't one of those. Besides, Leon had gotten sick with something and so he didn't have his wingman to back any of his gigs up.

So, it'd be a good-and-honest work weekend for him. As long as it made reasonable coin, he didn't mind, and the establishments were all too desperate to turn him away. Not when they knew he'd actually put his back into it.

He arrived to the establishment early, a large dining bar meant for bigger events and parties and the like. Sometimes, it served as a ballroom when certain celebrations wanted to include more humans than gollies. The Stacks didn't have just poor folk in it, there were some people that could afford such things, even if they were the rare few as most soon fled behind the red-brick walls instead as soon as they could.

The young man was dressed for a long night ahead of him, then day, and then night, then day again, and night... but for the moment, he looked the best he was going to. He had on a new pair of thick gray trousers, a pale yellowed shirt with the sleeves already rolled up to his biceps, hefty leather suspenders meant for working about, and a simple green pinstriped vest that was thin and silken. The vest, along with a horrendously clashing red kerchief, were provided by the boss. Meraki considered himself fortunate he got to keep his boots on, instead of having to wear any shiny (but ultimately, painful) shoes like most of the other servers.

He swept, and he mopped, and he set up the chairs so they weren't stacked anymore. Finally, he got behind the bar to wipe down some glasses when he heard people start to enter the opened establishment. Within no time, things got going and Meraki didn't have much time to do anything other than pour drinks, serve orders, and clean up messes.

The wick was young though, and his body was well-practiced, and he didn't slow or feel any aches. He wouldn't, not until that last day when everything would somehow seem to hit him all at once. What he did feel, however, was an intense craving to smoke. No matter how much adrenaline he had going, or how focused he was on his work, smoking always came around to demand that he pay attention to it. If he waited too long, he'd start sweating and making mistakes.

So, Meraki didn't risk it and the boss already knew that about him. It wasn't his first time working in the joint. He watched as a flood of students made their way onto the dance floor, pairing off and moving in time to the rhythm of the musicians set up.

The wick noticed one golly girl, though, who stood by the wall with a terrible pout on her face. He didn't recognize her, though that didn't mean he hadn't seen her before. Meraki didn't pay too close attention to all the different gollies that came through the Stacks. Only the ones he needed to remember - the dangerous and the fun ones, or especially, the dangerously fun ones.

Meraki lit a cigarette, walked over with his half-breed glamour that brushed against the gollie girl's field. He hesitated for a moment, unsure how the student felt about wicks though he knew many liked the relatively safe 'thrill' of meeting a wick - they had all sorts of stories in their heads about spokes, and usually assumed that any wick was a spoke because of it, rather than a tsat like him.

"Would y' like a smoke, miss?" he asked her, his own cigarette dangling at the side of his mouth as smoke rose from it. Meraki waited, though, instead of immediately handing one over. If she gave him some attitude, he'd move along quick enough.

The chaperone, it turned out, was Pleasance herself, as the 8th form student never showed up to bring them to the hall. So she found as she was shuffled off to watch as her friends and classmates had fun dancing and joking and laughing. She took to watching their dance steps. Although she'd some dancing experience, most of that had been disorganized getting swung and feet stepped on by her partner, not being the most agile galdor herself.

It looked like fun, she thought as they went around in circles about each other. Even the ones who weren't very good at it seemed to be having a good time, which drove a dagger of irritation through her field, which radiated outward for just a few moments as she seethed on the wall.

She saw someone approaching then, a male wick with a cigarette in his mouth. "Would y' like a smoke, miss?"

Pleasance turned from her classmates, to look him in the eye, then forced a smile. As he drew close, her field began to reflect off of his. She allowed for a sense of gratitude to slide from her field against his as she stole the cigarette out of his mouth. She smiled happily at him, pleased at having been so well served, she began to smoke. After her first puff, she let out a small but high-pitched cough, not quite used to the sort of leaf this wick was smoking. After the second, she turned to him again with a sly smile and a croak of a voice, "Thank you."

With every puff, she got more used to the taste of the leaf. If the wick took out another cigarette for himself, she'd turn to him, taking the joint out of her mouth, to say the words of monite. A small pull was all that was needed to create static friction. Unfortunately, as she invoked the words she'd tried so many times before, the cigarette nearly exploded in his face, but instead of snapping backward at him, it blew forward, scorching the frills in her sleeve. It caught fire, and she began beating the flaming sleeve lightly against the hapless wick, trying to put it out.

"Fuck! What did you do?!" The casting, as well as the scene she was making drew the attention of several of her classmates, who stopped dancing to watch and laugh at what was happening. Fucking luck of a wick! She thought, but didn't speak it.

Yet, the flame was stubborn, and didn't want to put itself out on the wick she was frantically slapping with her arm. Finally, a particularly chivalrous classmate came over with a drink, and threw it at her, dousing the flame. Pleasance gasped, as the cold wine not only put out the fire, but stained one of her few nice dresses.

She stood stock still for just a few moments, dropping the doused cigarette. It was around then she remembered the switchblade in her hair. She almost thought to take it out and use it. On the wick, or the asshole who'd thrown his drink at her. Sure he'd done it to save her from getting engulfed in flame, but...

Well, she was about to reflect that this was all her fault, but, was it? Was it really?

Did it matter? She was a galdor, she needed no justification by default when it came between her and a wick.

Even so, she had no intention of dragging the wick into a world of hurt that would surely await him for being an accessory to an attempted burning and subsequent dousing of a galdori girl. She rolled up the singed and stained sleeve, to see the damage, and was relieved that it hadn't caused any serious burns... for now. She'd have to call on the infirmary later, to make sure, but for now she refused to let the night be a total loss.

"Come with me," She said, tugging at his arm and trying to get him to move to the floor.
