SAUNDERS' FORGE
Soot District, Vienda
overview
A detached, two storey, L-shaped structure resides on a street corner at the edge of the Soot District alongside one of Vienda's cannals. Lanterns hang from the overhang of the upper storey and over watch the cobblestone street. On the north east corner a wrought iron sign depicting two crossed hammers over an anvil, groaning occasionally in the breeze. Made from brick and skimmed with a layer of cement plaster to create a smooth exterior, three tall sets of faded green shutter doors grace the edge on the corner, two on the east while one on the north. Following the north side presents a walled off court yard, a large gate granting access into it. Some ten feet beyond that is another set of shutter doors, though wider than the others that customers would most frequently go through. A shingle roof graces this structure with a pair of narrow dormers located upon the eastern street side, and a third dormer overlooking the small square court yard below. A few single-hung sash windows grace the structure, letting in natural light where possible.

Within the downstairs of this business the interior is divided into two sections key sections. The front most third hosts the three doors that a majority of the foot traffic would come through. It is here a collection of racks and counters present made products and samples – ready for the idle mind to study. Several dozen molds are also on display, each showing the potential for what can be made and cast in this establishment. A counter divides the width of this room, cutting off clients but allowing them to still view the work space beyond.

Behind the counter, the rear two thirds host the forge proper. Fed by coal or charcoal a great stone oven takes up the centre of the southern wall, a heavy steel door allowing it to be closed. While far from the same size as those in the steel mills, serving as both furnace and forge for the metalsmith – allowing them to conduct their work. A set of adjacent bellows feed it, while to the south-eastern corner a wrought iron spiral staircase leads up to the private quarters of the smith. Shelves, racks and tools fill the space, a trough for quenching metal, a tall brick cupboard with several shelves designed to host cooling pieces be they cast or forged. Right around the corner a large metal cover takes up a five foot by five foot square; to lift this cover would reveal a deep cube, filled with sand and ready to be used for castings.

Establishment Prior Winter 2718
On one of the side streets on the edge of the Soot District lies Saunders Forge. The front blackened with soot, the forge stands at ground level with a residence above it. Made from brick, an entire wall is covered in vertical shutters, with a central pair reaching from floor to ceiling. It is not uncommon for these heavy slats to be open out into the street, letting the heat of the forge and smelter escape outside.

The interior is incredibly plain, exposed brick and stone floor make up the base, the tones various shades and lacking in colour. There is nothing that denotes a counter, or formal workspace for conducting business. A long working bench reaching across the entirety of the right wall, occasionally displaying a collection of already made pieces or simple sketches of things that could be made. Beneath exists racks of several dozen molds, while above has a collection of tools needed for the job. The back wall hosted two brick constructs; the first was the large smelter – constantly aglow with residual heat fed in at its base. The other was a brick furnace with several deep shelves within. Some feet in front of it sits a trough filled with brine water. Taking central space is a five foot by five foot cube, lidded cube that goes down another five foot into the floor itself, filled with sand and ready for single use castings. Finally along the left wall sits an anvil and grindstone, with a ladder that leads up into the lodgings above.
services
Saunders' Forge primarily designs, builds and finishes a variety of pieces - both common and bespoke - for a variety of different clients from many walks of life. Varying from parts for machinery, tools or decoration, if the Saunders' Forge has it as cast they can rapidly build with a few days turn around - crucible be willing. Otherwise they can design, build and construct a cast to use. The Forge is also able to take to the streets, willing to take measurements and requests from a variety of repair workers. More interestingly however, Saunders' Forge can work with a variety of different metals beyond iron and steel upon request. They can also create multiple parts, and even pieces that can combine together to make a final piece or structure.

In all instances, the price varies depending on the materials used, piece size and the design in question. Casting is more commonly used for mass production or making several products that are required to be identical. Smithing however is normally used for a one off product.
  • Cast designing – a cast made from scratch, normally from a design or discussion with the client.
  • Make a cast – Using one of the premade casts available a piece is made.
  • Cast cloning – when an object is provided already made and a cast needs to be made to replicate.
  • Smithing Products – includes simpler blacksmith products, such as horse shoes, simple knives and a collection of basic tool and equipment that do not require casts to make. It should be noted that while Gale can make some weapons, she normally does not announce this openly and leaves it to request only (and does not necessarily know what kind of weapon people are on about).
OOC: On Gunsmithing
Unless you happen to be a person "in the know", it is safe (and probably best) to always presume that that a character in question does not know Gale is capable of making pistols.

However, for people who are "in the know", they can request to place a "special order" made by "Gunner" on behalf or recommended by a "friend". The name of the special order and the friend changes frequently, and individuals are required to have both parts of the code (and finances) to place the order. This code is used to place it into normal conversation without raising too much suspicion. As a general rule of thumb, the friend changes daily while the order changes weekly.
Friend: Isaac, Cameron, Tatiana, Finlay, Hollie, Rebecca, Sullivan, Poppy, Declan, Jacob, Evelyn and Glen.
Special Order: Candlestick, Cutlery Set, Skillet, Hinges, Kettle, Brazier.

A sample statement may go as so: "My friend Isaac said that Gunner made him a really good Kettle, can I place an order for one like his?"

Gale only accepts King's Currency for firearms.
Services Cost: poor to average. Focusing mainly on the lower classess of society. Firearms are incredibly expensive however and are considered at minimum average.
NPCs: None
Income Tier: Poor.
Advancement Plan:
  • Obtain more casts.
  • Have a bigger variety of materials.
  • Expand structurally and be able to store materials and cooling rooms/areas.
