Tall among Anaxas Galdori, Brodie is half Hessean half Anaxi. Naturally on the tan side, with pale hair and golden eyes, he dyes his hair black to look more Anaxi and has been instructed to stay out of the sun as much as possible. He's wiry, constantly fidgeting and assessing his surroundings. While his uniform is often disheveled, this is a look he's cultivated deliberately because he knows he looks attractive in it.
He has a distinct Hessean accent. Slouches and mutters a lot. When he's of a mind to, he moves shockingly fast and has good posture. He's very proud of his eye color, as it seems to him clear proof that he is, in fact, one of the galdori.
Withdrawn, fidgety, and often sullen, Brodie carries a book of poetry (as violent as possible) around with him at most times because he's found reading makes most people leave him alone. He's very attentive and nervous, but not in a spacey or shy way as people generally assume; he's secretly itching for a fight. Any fight will do, so long as it doesn't endanger his inheritance.
He despises the galdori and especially the nation of Anaxas and their delusional superiority complex, but can't act on this, so the hate comes out directed most often at passives, a socially acceptable offloading of his true feelings. He thinks he's deeply clever and attractive, but has to hide his true cleverness and attractiveness lest he be found out and lose the wealth and position he's worked so hard to inherit.
Eats a lot and very fast because he's used to someone else stealing the food. Has quite a bit of war poetry memorized; since he doesn't have many friends (thanks to the one-two punch of having a dangerous secret and being an abrasive, scrappy weasel once you actually get to know him), he reads graphic poetry and war stories and fantasizes about being a way more successful general than his father.
While he's actually very scrappy and a decent fighter with an iron stomach, he pretends he has a much worse constitution at school; being sickly is a good explanation for never having been seen in public before, for his gaps in magical knowledge, and for not talking to people. Will fake being seriously ill to get out of anything he doesn't want to do.
On paper, Brodie Sutherland-Imhae is the privileged second son and heir to Anaxi galdor Lieutenant General Archibald Dougal Sutherland and his Hessean noble galdor wife, Ebbe Imhae. Brodie was raised in Hesse mostly by Ebbe, who has made her distaste for Brunnhold clear.
When their first son, the adored Alban Sutherland-Imhae, died suddenly at age 29, it became clear that Ebbe could no longer spoil the younger by keeping him from real society, so Brodie was transferred to Brunnhold to uphold both of his families names.
In truth he is Kasimir (Kasik) Sutherland, wick child of an affair between Archibald Sutherland and a Hessean human woman. Dropped onto Archibald's doorstep as a baby, Kasik was promptly turned over to a Hessean orphanage lest Archibald's infidelity become widely known. When Ebbe and Archibald's only son, Alban, died in a riding accident, Ebbe, determined to not lose her family's hard-fought hold in Anaxi society to Archibald's greedy cousins, forced Archibald to go back to the orphanage and retrieve the now-teenaged Kasik. They had paperwork forged, and the wick orphan Kasik became galdori noble Brodie.
Ill-tempered and completely unmannered, it took three years of work before his new parents determined that he was couth and magically skilled enough to attend Brunnhold. Kasik/Brodie despises both Ebbe and Archibald, but especially Archibald, as at least him and Ebbe can agree that Anaxas is an insufferable country full of snobby nationalists.
Keenly aware of the gap between himself and his peers financially, culturally, and academically, he spends a lot of time studying school materials and watching other students to parrot how they interact.
"Brodie" still feels like a role Kasik is playing, that if he does good enough at he will be able to shed. He doesn't fully realize that he is Brodie Sutherland now, and for the rest of his life. While he resents the golden brother he never met, Kasik has poured over his notes and uses this absent older brother as a guide; if asked, he will speak genuinely fondly of Alban.

Graduate from Brunnhold without being expelled, manage to pretend to be galdori long enough to inherit (mostly by outliving his parents), not embarrass himself too badly as a Hessean among Anaxi.
His secret. deepest dream is to outdo Alban, the deceased brother he never met, in all his grades and accomplishments. Entertaining joining the military as an officer after university; while he's not entirely happy about the idea of joining Hessean's occupying forces, he's not sure what else he can do with his life.
