Physical Description

Image

Born in the kingdom of Hesse, Raman is quite a spectacle among the ordinary anaxi. Standing at 5’8” he’s quite well-built for a galdor, even among his own people. He carries with him the traditional southern features of olive skin and almost black hair which he keeps short and practical, trimming it on the side. You could call him handsome by hessean standards, although taste is subjective. He has a sharp jawline and straight nose, deep velvety eyes and slim brows. He usually shaves off his facial hair but it is not uncommon to appear with a stubble.

As for clothing, Raman is what one would call a dandy, favoring clothes more commonly associated with younger wicks. He wears darker tones of warm colors, beige, burgundy, magenta, dim gold and sandy brown and makes his appearance more extreme with a tufted scarf and varying amount of fake jewelry. He also carries with him a bronze-colored, weathered long coat and whatever trinket he can get his hands on.

Personality

Image

For lack of a better word, Raman is kind of a dork. He mostly lives in his own little version of reality where priorities shift with his mood and the current project he’s preoccupied with, but those nearly never align with real life responsibilities. He had his fair share of experiences, each leaving another dent on his mind, making him what he is today – a warm hearted but sarcastic cynic, deep down trying to do the right thing but always with a snarky remark.

As for his ego, it undulated so much he behaves like a humbled demigod. He has the air of someone supposedly much more powerful than what meets the eye, although he will deny it to no end. He still retains the galdor creed of superiority but thinks of it as an opportunity to help the lesser races out like some kind of paternal figure. Meanwhile, he learned to hide this among the wicks and humans as it tends to hinder his efforts of blending with them.

When asked to help, he will immediately tell you away, then spend days searching for you to tell that he reconsidered. He always claims he doesn’t want to get involved in anything yet he somehow always does but makes everyone feel guilty about bringing him along, snatching him from his comfortable dork dimension.

Backstory

Born in the hessean capital of Mestiga as the second son of a galdor magistrate, Raman always got the short stick as a child. Growing up in the shadow of Anris, his elder brother has left him an angsty, furious little boy always fighting for attention he didn’t get. There wasn’t anything outstanding about him. His physique was average in the south, his magic capabilities were lackluster compared to other galdori children and he never had the finesse to succeed in politics and plotting. The only thing that told him apart from his coevals was his short temper and willingness to brawl – which he usually lost.

The young Raman was about twelve when his stumbling studies at Mestiga’s Drekkur University were cut short as a special request from his father. He was without explanation sent to Anaxas to continue his academic path at Brunnhold. As it was later revealed, Raman showed remarkable capabilities for Perceptive Conversation, a type of low regard in Hesse, but the anaxi cathedra agreed to see his education through at the highest level.

As it turned out, “remarkable” was an understatement. Raman was a clever and quick study, catching up to anaxi-born students with unexpected efficinency and even managed to top some of the most glorified candidates for the city’s highest political seats. The taste of this newfound power intoxicated him and he reveled in the fame and false friendships he managed to create for himself. To clarify, Raman was never number one. He was among the best, but never reached so high as to claim top scores, but it didn’t matter anymore. He was no longer last. He was considered talented, and after a childhood of shame it emboldened him.

This age of egomania got so bad that after graduating he returned to Hesse and made the single biggest mistake of his life – he challenged his elder brother to a ritual duel for the inheritance of their father’s standing as a magistrate. Raman counted on his knowledge over his brother to manipulate his perception during their fight but years of studying apart changed him enough for this plan to fail. Anris was an intermediate converser in Static style specifically trained in magical warfare, so to somehow achieve victory, Raman broke a taboo.
He tried to craft a Conversation mid-duel.
The mona denied this hastily constructed spell which made it backlash. The effect blinded Raman for two straight days, tormenting him with horrible visions and daydreams. Anris eventually spared his brother, yet the fight took a heavy toll on him, shattering his ego into fractions of what Brunnhold had built up.

Raman wasn’t exiled or even asked to leave, yet he did anyways. The shame of the failed duel stung at his mind like an inky black needle, never letting him forget how heavy is the cost for false confidence. He eventually decided to return to Anaxas, joining a wick caravan halfway through. He didn’t speak much, only listened and from that an unfamiliar interest bloomed.
The wick turned out to be an interesting bunch. They seemed easy-going and carefree, never searching for more power but never showing weakness. They made do with what they got. That simplicity – and the fact that no one asked him why a galdor dared to appear in their presence – eventually made Raman remain in the caravan’s company for two years. During that time, he observed the nomads way of life, their culture, and mentality. He saw something, a flickering shine of a buried treasure under the stereotypical mockery his kind gave the wicks. Some universal truth that eventually helped him come to terms with his own self and find a purpose.

Even though this realization struck him with the wick caravan, he didn’t want to stay with them till the end of his days. The next time they visited Vienda he separated from the Tyats (as he later found out) and moved into the city, settling in Uptown close to the dives and applied for a researcher position at Brunnhold. Knowing that the true nature of his research wouldn't get a proper founding he officially claimed it was about how galdori culture affected and improved the life of wicks, thus further strengthening the fact that their rule proved beneficial for even the most shunned people - a sentiment he more or less agreed with. In practice however, it consisted of blending in with the urbanized tsats, trying to observe their culture.

That was half a year ago. This research nearly absorbed Raman since, and despite the clandestine opposition from his colleagues at the university, he managed to create a small circle of wicks who trust him enough to reveal some minor cultural details and beliefs for an occasional favor or two. Nothing major yet, not even close to their unique magic or Spokes’ Almanac, but in time many things are possible.

Career and Income

Occupation

Raman is an aknowledged researcher and anthropologist at Brunnhold currently investigating wick magic and their connection tot he Mona. For this, he spends his days among the tsats in Vienda, trying to speak to them and doing small favors for them.

Income: Average

As a galdor he basicly always earns more then other races but among his kind his profession doesn’t really pay well at his level.

Housing and Inventory

Housing: Rented House

Raman rents a residence ont he outskirts of Uptown, close to the poorer side of the city as his research requires him to frequently visit the dives. He has a human servant to take care of the house while he’s away, but nothing expensive our really valuable.

Inventory

Raman doesn’t own a weapon (yet), and his profession doesn’t require much tools. He has, however, a large variety of fake jewles and wick-styled clothes, both because of his tendency for the bizarre and as a means to earn the wicks’ trust.

Goals

Long term he wishes to understand most non-galdori cultures, reveal the positive differences and integrate them into galdor society.

Short term he really urges to see a Spokes’ Almanac, although it is quite unachievable at the moment.
