Physical Description

Jonah takes fairly strongly after his human heritage, if not completely. He stands at just under 6’ tall and is broad-shouldered and tends to put on lean muscle fairly easily. His dark brown hair tends to come to about his shoulders, more because he forgets to get it cut than as a deliberate fashion statement. It’s often pulled back away from his face, and not particularly neatly. There’s almost always some dusting of stubble on his square jaw, though he prefers to keep himself as clean-shaven as he can. His eyes are dark brown as well, watchful and quiet.

Jonah takes decent care of his clothes and his person, but does have a vague air of the shabby about him. He dresses simply, as befits his station in life and his personality. His ears are pierced, but he doesn’t often wear jewelry (unless he’s with Tai). There are few more outlandish pieces in his closet, but much like the jewelry these are mostly for Tai.

Personality

Jonah is a quiet man who doesn’t like the spotlight. One would never know he’s a wick to look at him; even his glamour is understated. He prefers to think before he speaks, which often means he doesn’t say much of anything at all. But he smiles easily enough, and tries his best to be a good man. He’s very much the Oldest Son, and devoted to taking care of his mother and younger siblings (twin sisters and a brother), especially after his father passed away. Jonah is the kind of man who will put his needs last without a second thought or a complaint, often to his detriment. It’s like pulling teeth to get Jonah to admit what he really wants or to be “selfish”.

He has a particularly pleasant voice, and sings quite well—if you can convince him to do it. He likes music, but doesn’t consider himself much of a musician, despite having skill in that arena. He’s often writing songs that he hides away from sight. Only Tai has heard most of them, and even he hasn’t heard them all.

For the most part, Jonah has always been accepting of the world the way it is. Up until the riots, he would never have considered things being any other way. As a tsat, he’s never felt particularly comfortable with more “wickish” wicks, with some very specific exceptions. He’s more comfortable with humans, and indeed most would take him for one at a distance. His opinions on race relations are mostly very typical for Anaxas.

The riots have left him feeling unsettled with the status quo in a way he has never been before, and he doesn’t know what to do with it. He’s not a revolutionary; revolutions bring instability, and instability can potentially bring harm to his mother and siblings.

Backstory

Jonah is the oldest son of Chelsea and Jericho Fulton, who went on to have three more children after him. In most ways his childhood was typical and unremarkable. The Fultons run a grocery store in Vienda, and as Jonah grew older he took on more and more responsibility at the store to help support his parents. He was very close to both of his parents. In the winter of his twelfth year, his father got sick and passed away.

Young Jonah was angry after that, and for the first time in his life became unruly and acted out. His mother didn’t know what to do with him, concerned and frightened. She still kept in irregular contact with her cousins, spokes in the Yellow Eye tribe. She decided that what her son needed was a change of scenery, to get a fresh perspective. That Bethas, she sent him with their cousins to Surwood.

Surwood was the antidote that Jonah needed, if not in the way his mother had quite envisioned. That Bethas let him find a different side of himself—and meet Tai Jokela, who would go on to be one of his closest friends (and unrequited love). It was there that Jonah took up music as a hobby, spurred on by Tai. He came back to Vienda happier than he’d left it, much to his mother’s relief.

Jonah and Tai continued to meet erratically, and Jonah’s feelings (kept firmly to himself) deepened considerably until he was absolutely, undeniably, devotedly in love. He even tried traveling with Tai and his family for a year or so when he was eighteen, but ultimately he was a son of Vienda and a tsat, and had to return. They keep in touch, but it’s hard to write to someone who never stays in one place.

The riots changed nothing and everything for Jonah. His family was safe; they’d run the store all his life, and their writs certainly weren’t in question. But he was troubled, both by the riots themselves and by the aftermath. And, selfishly, heartbroken to realize that meant he wouldn’t be able to see Tai anymore, not even sporadically. Leaving in Bethas was too hard now, with his family needing him at the shop as they did. His day-to-day hasn’t changed, but the unrest in the city hasn’t left him completely untouched either and he worries for the day when his family isn’t as safe as he hopes they are.

Career and Income

Occupation: Shop Assistant

Jonah has been helping at the store his family runs for as long as he’s been old enough to do so.

Income: Average

The Fulton family store is a neighborhood fixture, and has been since Jonah’s grandfather opened it before his father was born. They do fairly well for themselves, with a little bit of savings and rarely worry about where their next meal will come from.

Housing and Inventory

Housing: Rented Housing

The Fulton family lives above the shop in Ellsmere in a 3-bedroom apartment. Jonah has his own room as the oldest, a fact for which he is both guilty and grateful.

Inventory

Jonah has all of the average things one would expect of a man of his age and socio-economic position. Of note: a guitar he bought while on Surwood, well cared for; a collection of letters from Tai; a notebook where he writes all his songs.

Goals

  • Support his family and the store
  • Figure out how he feels about the State of Anaxas
  • See Tai again, and maybe one day tell him how he feels (probably not)
