Luella stands at a modest five feet and five inches, but what she lacks in height, she makes up for in sheer ferocity. Evenly spaced, deep brown eyes glare from under a high forehead, almost constantly furrowed in a frown. Thin, arched brows trace downward into a gently flared nose, which rests over full lips perpetually twisted in a sneer. Black hair with a slight curl frames that sneering face, falling to the center of her back when worn unbound. Her face is weathered by sea and sun alike, small lines gradually forming in the corners of her eyes and mouth.
The pirate's skin is a colorful tapestry of intricate tattoos, encasing a muscular form hardened from years of leading such a harsh lifestyle. She generally holds herself with an air of proud arrogance, back straight with her chin in the air as if looking down on all who approach her. Which she frequently is.
Overall, Luella is an attractive woman, but gods help anyone who thinks to tell her so. She could even be called beautiful if it weren't for her utterly unapproachable demeanor and the looks of contempt or disgust that frequently distort her otherwise pretty face.
Luella is, in a word, cold. A harsh occupation and an even harsher adolescence have forced her to be, to the point where even she questions if she can feel anything besides rage any more. Every now and then, a dark, bitter sense of humor will glimmer through her otherwise resentful mien, but those moments are few and far between.
The pirate has never been the type to get along well with others, and as the years go on, she only seems to get worse. Quick to anger, even quicker to show it, and with the unexpected strength to back it up, her unpleasant disposition has not earned her many friends throughout her life - a fact that she's seldom mourned. Her seeming lack of a conscience, broad range of combat skill, and indifference to possible consequences makes her well suited to her life of piracy and her position among Hawke's thugs.
The rare glimpses of a softer person beneath the hard veneer usually occur around children, the dour woman much quicker to smile or even laugh when in the presence of the more innocent portion of the population. She's been known to slide many a bird into many a grubby little hand, frequently slipping loaves of bread or baskets of fruit to the orphans that lurk around the back alleys of Old Rose Harbour. If confronted about such behavior, she will vehemently deny it, but the port's young street rats know better. They know there's more to Luella than the stony and irascible face she shows the world.
Views on the Other Races
Galdor: Unlike most humans, Luella holds no strong feelings toward the galdor. She resents and dislikes most people in general, and she has no greater animosity toward the galdor than she does to anyone else. There is some resentment toward their position in society, however, her life in Old Rose Harbor as a Bad Brother has given her a unique place of power on the outskirts of governmental law, so galdori rule is of little concern to her.
Wicks: Born in Mimsbury-in-the-Marsh, the pirate spent a large portion of her childhood around wicks, and most of her few fond memories from her younger years are of the whimsical nomads. Because of this, she regards wicks in an even better light than she does her fellow humans. While Luella could never be described as friendly, she's at least less likely to dismiss a wick outright if she happens to speak with one.
Passives: As with the galdor, Luella is indifferent to passives. What does it matter to her that they were born without magic? So was she.
Raen: She has no knowledge that raen even exist, and if she ever came across one, she'd likely show the same discourtesy to them as she does to everyone else.
Luella Blythe was born to George and Eleanor Blythe in Mimsbury-in-the-Marsh, a small town of humans and wicks right near the border between Mugroba and Anaxas. Her childhood was a calm and happy one, surrounded by her loving parents and doting brothers, George, Jr. and Harry. All of that changed at the age of fourteen when she took a ship to Old Rose with her parents, an ill-fated merchant's journey to sell some of Eleanor's recently crafted jewelry. Along the way, their ship was boarded by pirates, a bloody raid which ended in most of the ship's cargo commandeered, her parents slain, and a young Luella fighting tooth and nail to ensure she wouldn't be next.
Perhaps it was pity for her tender age or perhaps it was her admirable tenacity, but either way, the pirate crew which had stolen everything from her would eventually turn out to be the ones that gave it all back. In spite of her many protests and more than a few bites and scratches, they took the girl in among themselves and taught her everything she needed to know about fighting and survival. As much as she hated her newfound "family," Luella was nothing if not a fighter; she absorbed their lessons like a sponge, determined that one day she would rise above them all and take everything they had for herself.
That didn't quite go as expected, the girl remaining among their number throughout the rest of her teenage years and well into her twenties as they sailed and pillaged the seas around Anaxas. With every throat that fell to her blade, every voice that uselessly cried out for mercy, she felt more of the girl she'd once been dissolve and fade away, slowly replaced by something hard as uncut diamonds, and just as jagged. By the time she broke away from that crew, most of those who had participated in the raid that claimed her parents' lives had either perished or gone their own way, leaving Luella with a deflated sense of purpose and the burning question of what to do next.
Lu eventually joined up with another crew out of Old Rose Harbor, proving her prowess again and again with each successive raid. Her rate of success and cold-hearted savagery in battle earned her a reputation among the other pirates and lowlifes of Old Rose, eventually leading her to be sought out by a different crew, one under the employ of the "King of the Underworld," Silas Hawke.
For two years, she sailed with that crew, protecting Hawke's seedier shipments and raiding others that would dare to infringe on the King's territory. However, recent "creative differences" with her Captain's first mate have lead to Luella parting ways with the crew. (i.e. She was expelled from the ship on the business end of a pistol...) In the meantime, she's taking on smaller, more independent contracts until she finds another group of scalawags that she isn't quite as tempted to try to pitch into the abyss.
