Appearance

Emilio Sanguini stands around 5’6 and has a lithe and slender build, sharp cheekbones, and an angular face. His eyes are almond-shaped and steel grey in colour, rimmed in heavy lashes, and his hair is a dark brown and falls in soft waves. It is just long enough to brush his shoulders. He occasionally wears it tied back, but usually wears it loose. He dresses in fine suits, favouring black, greens, and earthy tones, and wears gold, thin-framed reading glasses when required. He carries himself elegantly, and due to an accident when he was younger, he walks with a limp and uses a cane.

Personality

Emilio tends to come off as aloof and unapproachable to most. This is somewhat of a defense mechanism. In reality Emilio has a rather delicate personality. He is easily bothered, and has been hurt countless times, so he has erected these shields around himself to keep from getting hurt further. He is rather bad at dealing with stress, and when life gets to be too much he is prone to locking himself in his study with his manuscripts and such and hardly saying a word to anyone. He is easily bored and can have anywhere from two to five books he is tinkering with at any given time, as he will very often pick up one, toy with it, put it down, and work on another thing. His outward appearance suggests someone who is very proud, however he usually puts very little effort into his appearance unless he is going somewhere important. Otherwise he tends to just tie his hair back in a loose knot, put on a crisp jacket, and go about his business. He is also very snarky, though he takes care to guard that when dealing with people who aren't close enough to him to know he's a bit of a curmudgeon.

Lio tends to hold the common Anaxi opinions of lower races, especially passives. He does admit, though, that there are exceptions to every rule. There are a small number of humans and wicks he is familiar with, and whose company he genuinely enjoys. Chief among these is his housekeeper. He also believes that granting lower races more freedoms to avoid social unrest is the right path forward, especially if it is to avoid more riots and fires.

History

Emilio was born into a prominent military family in Vienda late in the dry season of 2683, to Alexander and Andolina Sanguini. Most of his family has been involved with the Seventen at some point or another, and this history stretches back to at least his great-great-grandfather on his father’s side. From a young age, Emilio was expected to follow in these footsteps. However, he never much cared for the idea. He was more fond of books and spellery than he was of any sort of military training. His father disapproved, which caused a riff between them that only grew with time. His mother, on the other hand, encouraged him to follow his own path, much to her husband’s chagrin. Andolina often shielded her son from his father’s temper, as she was one of the few people that he would listen to. She always enjoyed reading, and taught Lio a great many things, including sign language, which she had learned to communicate with one of her close friends.

Emilio entered Brunnhold at age ten after testing promisingly, and largely enjoyed his time at school, away from home, as it let him pursue his own interests unhindered by judgement or disapproval. He excelled in his studies and showed a knack for physical magic as well as writing and literature. When he was in his fourth year, his mother became pregnant with his younger sister, Seraphina. The pregnancy was a difficult one, and left Andolina unfortunately passed away shortly after the baby was born. Her delicate health was kept from Emilio, and he was unable to see her in her final days. He blames his father for this, and, to an extent, blamed his sister for their mother’s death. This, of course, put even more strain on his relationship with his family.

With Andolina, and thus their buffer, gone, Alexander had far less patience for Emilio. He forced his expectations on him with renewed intensity, and expected him to enlist in the Seventen after graduation regardless of Emilio’s own wishes. The Gods, it seemed, had a different plan. During his last year in school, an accident led to him being severly injured. He recovered, but was left lame in one leg. Though the injury still causes him some occasional pain years later, and has left him largely reliant on a cane to get around on his own for any extended period, Lio counts it as a blessing. With serving in the Seventen entirely off the table, Alexander was left with little choice but to allow him to find work in his chosen discipline: writing.

Emilio graduated with several offers to write for various periodicals, eventually settling on contributing short crime fiction stories to a regular anthology while also working on his own novels. He saw some success, with his pieces being quite popular, and was able to buy himself a small house in Smike’s End and live largely independent of his family, and most importantly, his father. He was happy, for the most part. While his serious novels saw modest success and sales, he began to look for ways to earn more money and cement his status as an independent man. It was around this time that he began to dabble in writing novellas for arguably less respectable publications under a pseudonym. To his surprise, he rather enjoyed this sort of work, and it took off faster than the novels he was writing under his own name. Thus, the widely popular Tally Dreadful author M. Broadhallow was born.

However, his charmed life away from his family would not last. A few months after he turned 32, his father’s health took a turn for the worse and his younger sister was suddenly thrust back into his life. While Emilio had never wanted much to do with Seraphina, the two were forced to be together as their father’s condition worsened to deal with well-wishers and doctors and whoever else came out of the woodwork. This was actually beneficial, in the end. Through the hardship and pain of dealing with their father’s worsening health and eventual death, the two were able to become closer, and Emilio was able to reconcile his feelings of resentment over the death of their mother. The two of them now have a rather good relationship, and Emilio slightly regrets that it didn’t happen sooner.

At age 40, he still lives in his small house in Smike’s End with his osta, Andie, and his housekeeper, and continues writing as both Emilio Sanguni and M. Broadhallow. In his spare time, he tends to his growing collection of houseplants that are slowly taking over the room in his house that gets the most sun. He also enjoys cooking and cooks for himself whenever his housekeeper takes her weekend off.
