Physical Description

Laureline is a rather short and round woman, hourglass-shaped, with black hair she has grown her entire life that reaches the backs of her knees when worn loose. She has warm yellow eyes, the color of fresh egg yolks, with eyelids resembling her Hoxian grandmother’s. She has a round, soft, technically attractive face, but it would look nicer if she smiled, and she rarely does. Her thick, dark eyebrows instead enhance her usual blank face, which is often mistaken for a glare by others. She wears bright colors to set off her striking coloring -- vivid grass greens, teal blues, red-violets. Her hair is usually either worn up in two high buns, or partially pulled up into one bun at the back of her head, with practical hairsticks to keep it in place. She does not often wear jewelry, as she spends most of her time at school, but when she does it is simple. She is much more commonly seen wearing small wire-framed reading glasses and bent over a book in the Brunnhold library.

Personality

Laur is extremely studious and serious to a fault, even within the bounds of Brunnhold culture. This does not generally endear her to others. She is happy to help people with things she is good at, but often has trouble reconciling that others do not have the same priorities that she does, and so can often unintentionally cause offense. Her face is not very expressive naturally, and any expressions that she does make can often look false and put-on, even if they are a true reflection of her emotions. She has always generally felt a gulf between her and other people, and is unsure how to bridge it. Losing her relationship with her brother due to him dropping off the map did not particularly help. She often wishes that there was a book that would tell you the unwritten rules of social interactions, though reading etiquette books does help her with formal situations. The fact that most of her social behavior clearly comes from etiquette books, some rather outdated, also does not endear her to others.

Backstory

Laureline had a childhood that, while happy, often involved her being far away from her parents. Her father often traveled for work, and although he brought her and her older brother many toys and gifts, she still missed him, as is to be expected. Her mother wanted to care, but had a busy career and wasn't able to stay home to take care of her two young children. Much of their family lived far away, with the exception of their paternal grandmother, Ksari Ev Almond. However, Ksari was largely busy with her own work and hobbies during Laureline’s early life, living in the outskirts of Muffey.
They were left in the care of a nanny, as many galdori children are. Laureline and Charlie, her brother, didn't like their nanny, who was a human with a permit to read and write and a rather gruff manner, much at all. They often made fun of her behind her back, ignoring the fact that she could probably still hear them. Soon the children were given books to entertain themselves, and the nanny got days off. A win-win situation. Laur's brother took to reading typical boy stories, about aeroships, boats out on the ocean, steam engines...Laureline liked non-fiction, and soon was reading at a high level for her age in order to understand complex texts of biology and other sciences. Well, not really understand, per se, more just being able to read the words.
When her brother left for Brunnhold two years before her, she was lonelier than ever, and devoured everything she could read at the age of nine in her father's library. She took the books she couldn't with her to Brunnhold in her tenth year. She scored rather high on the tests, receiving close to a ten, and entered into school to join Charlie.
They were close for about a year, but when Charlie got older and started not wanting to hang around with his little sister, she was alone with her books again. She dived into her studies both at school and in her dorm, and received top marks, all the time. Although smarts were obviously valued among her peers, her total isolation and perfection was not. For the rest of her school career, she had some casual acquaintances, and people who sat next to her in class for 'help.' Otherwise, her main social connections came through her grandmother, who commandeered her during school breaks to help with her cattery and osta show career.
As her final year neared, however, she realized she'd only really experienced half of Brunnhold--sure, schoolwork and magic was fine and dandy, but one needed connections, and friends, surely. As of now she is starting to pay less attention to her studies, and more to the classmates she's been sharing the halls of Brunnhold with for nearly ten years now. Hopefully there's still time for her.

Income: Wealthy

Laur receives a generous monthly stipend from her parents to support her while at school.

Housing and Inventory

Housing: Type

Laureline lives in a single dormitory room at Brunnhold for most of the year, though she often visits her family in Vienda at their house in Bellington over school holidays if they’re in town, or works with her grandmother in Muffey at the Obelisk cattery. She deeply loves her little room at school after the many terrible years of shared dormitories and does her best to decorate it with plants and other personal touches.

Inventory

  • Ch. Obelisk’s Indigo Moonshadow, a Hoxian-variety osta who won Best in Show at the Anaxas Osta Fancier’s Society Show in 2717. He is now retired.
  • A copy of The Ladies’ Book of Etiquette and Manual of Politeness, published in 2670 and purchased not long after.
  • Various other books on diverse subjects, borrowed from her parents’ library.
  • School uniforms, as well as a number of dresses suited for most occasions.

Goals

  • Make friends of any sort, and perhaps find someone to court over a longer period of time to please her parents.
  • Finish at Brunnhold and continue her education in preparation to teach there in the future.
  • Work towards mastering her magic specializations and eventually, in the far future, learn her true name.
