Appearance

Tobias is lightly tanned, slim, and just a smidge short for his age. His crumpled ears, straight nose, arched brows and steady gaze give him a precocious, calculating look. Brown eyes sit under side-swept, messy brown hair and a little over a year spent in a factory have given him a strong, if somewhat diminutive frame.

Tobias can often be seen fidgeting when he is by himself, combing his hands through his short, messy hair, picking his nails, or carving his name into a bit of wood. Despite this apparent restlessness, Tobias tends to get lost in idle daydreams and has a hoarse, thin, soft-spoken voice.

Personality

Tobias's personality can be likened to a hedgehog: charming from a distance but capable of great sting up close. He rarely filters his zesty opinions, except perhaps in the presence of the factory foreman. Despite this, no one would claim him mean-spirited or rude for the sake of being rude and most in fact recognize his good-hearted nature. Not yet blind sighted by the strict, formulaic morality of adults, Tobias’s heart is open to those less fortunate than himself which however leaves him vulnerable to exploitation.

Those who get to know him will soon discover that his wit and spicy opinions are often shields for a touchy pride hiding underneath, and that his forward demeanor is really just a case of strategy, where attack is the best defense. With little to call his own, Tobias is fiercely protective of what he does have whether that's material things or friends.

With no siblings to show him the way and no serious parental guidance to speak of, Tobias often has to find things out the hard way. Whatever his faults may be, the process of learning by doing and getting back up on his own two feet has stamped out any semblance of laziness, if he ever possessed such a trait to begin with.

Tobias idolizes Jon Serro and is a dedicated member of the resistance and feels a strong need to prove himself. Though he's smart enough to hide it, Tobias severely dislikes gollies and hates being around them.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths:
  • Resourceful. Whether through wit or stealth, he manages to wiggle himself out of most dangerous situations he puts himself in.
  • Empathetic. With the exception of gollies, Tobias is capable of great empathy toward others and is considered kind and fiercely caring by most who know him.
Weaknesses:
  • Physically limited by his age. Cannot be expected to win a fight if it comes to blows unless it's against someone pint-sized.
  • Psychologically limited by his age. Does not understand the long-term consequences of his actions. Acts rashly and has exceptionally little regard for his own safety. Thoroughly irresponsible.
  • Has a racist bias towards Galdori. He truly hates them all and lacks the nuance of mind to understand that not all gollies are the same.

History

Tobias is the only child of Melissa Clarke and Lewis Murdock. who ran a little shop in Dorhaven near the Wraithwine Wood. Murdock & Clarke's was a furniture shop that made and sold common furniture like chairs, tables, stools, and more fanciful objects on special order. Three years before the bombing of Dorhaven saw the shop destroyed however, a secret expansion to the shop harbored a small library and served as an illegal education ground for some of the local populace.

Having worked in a lumberyard for many years, Lewis knew how to pick and choose the right wood for each task while Melissa knew how to sell each item by giving each piece it's own intriguing story. He was the introverted artisan, she the social butterfly. Together they made a good time and carved out a decent living for themselves and even had money to spare when the Galdori discovered the quaint little village with its picturesque shops.

As the Galdori influence grew, so did the very tyranny that Lewis and Melissa had previously managed to evade. For a while they tried to get the mayor's good side, requesting permission to expand the shop. Bram Dowell however thought an expansion might ruin the postcard-like qualities of the shop and refused. More and more the Galdori presence became felt, the peace and quiet disturbed and their business goals continued to be hampered by the mayor.

Not long after Tobias had been born, Lewis who'd become increasingly frustrated with the limitations imposed upon his business, got in touch with some resistance folk. For the longest time he'd avoided any kind of association and tried to live by the Galdori-imposed rules. Now with child, and requiring more income to sustain his family's livelihood, he saw no other choice but to expand his income. What started as paid information gathering (after all, Murdock & Clarke's had earned some respect from the visiting Galdori) turned into hosting secret resistance meeting, turned into supplying the resistance with materials.

Despite Melissa's best efforts, she couldn't keep her young son away from resistance types for long. Before he'd turned eight, the boy had become infatuated with resistance ideals and idolized Jon Serro completely.. Lewis too became increasingly involved with the resistance, to the point of supporting the operation financially. While this gave the Murdocks a good name within the resistance, the family as a whole suffered. Debts started to emerge, then debts with interest, more time was spent drinking alcohol and concocting ideas to overthrow the Galdori rule than it was spent making new furniture until, at last, the mountain of debts came crashing down.

Tobias had just turned ten when a squadron of Seventen came to collect his father and took him to debtor's prison. To his mind, there was no greater injustice and the ordeal was yet another proof that the Galdori were vicious, cold-hearted people altogether and ought to be despised.

Deprived of their primary income, the family was forcibly split up. Melissa did her best to sell what inventory was left while Tobias travelled to the big city and gained employment in a large shoe factory. Every hat he could spare was sent back home to his mother who took it to the debtor's prison to pay off Lewis's debts. Then one day, a year later, an acquittance from the resistance tracked him down and brought terrible news.. An explosion in Dorhaven had claimed his mother's life and lay the family shop in ruin. A terrorist attack, the gollies claimed, but Tobias didn't believe it for one second.

Without his mother and with no means to pay off the debt that holds his father in prison, Tobias decided that he would have revenge for his family. He joined the resistance in full that very same day and has worked tirelessly for them since. Even if it exhausts him to work a job in the factory and put up pamphlets throughout the city, or shadow marks, he is determined to hurt the gollies back and, if he can, find out the truth of what happened in Dorhaven and expose it to the rest of the world. It turned out he had a knack for stealth and espionage, and it didn't take him long to earn the nickname Egg after he'd dropped an Egg on Hanz Morde's head in a rash act of defiance.

Miscellaneous

Aptitudes:
  • Mental: Poor.
  • Physical: Good.
  • Social: Good.
Focus:
  • Combat: Unarmed Combat (Basic)
  • Linguistics: Estuan (Fluent)
  • Magic: None.
  • Professional: Woodworking (Beginner), Stealth (Beginner), Espionage (Beginner)
Income - Poor:
Tobias works in a shoe factory in Vienda. He earns enough to stay alive, and that's all that can be said about that.

Housing
Tobias lives in a shared, cramped home on the outskirts of Soot District together with an odd mixture of other workers, some old and some young. The place is a great deal quieter and cleaner than the factory itself, but that is hardly a compliment. Being overcrowded it's also a breeding place for disease and it's not uncommon for criminals to pay the place a visit and scoop up some fresh recruits. Sometimes he can get some shelter and some proper food and care through the resistance, though not quite as often as he would like.

Inventory
- Basic toiletries
- Three sets of clothing, two for suitable for the warmer seasons and one for winter.
- A pocket knife he found

Goals
Some of Tobias's Major Goals are:
  • To learn more about what happened in Dorhaven in Harris 2719. He doesn't believe the official story and is convinced that there's something fishy going on, a suspicion that is undoubtedly fueled by being deeply involved in the resistance.
  • Free his father from debtor's prison. One way or another.
Minor goals are:
  • Stop working in the shoe making factory. He hates it there and has the ambition to run his own business. Any opportunity at all that would allow him to stop working in the factory will be immediately embraced.
