Physical Description
Joel is rather short for a human male, standing at 160 cm on his tiptoes. Yet his body is toned and lean and in good shape from the labour that he does. His black hair is long and he often has a bit of a beard on his face as well. His skin is rather pale and he needs to be careful under the summer sun, for his skin tends to burn without protection. His back is badly scarred and some marks of past and present violence have found their way in other parts of his body as well.
Joel has hazel eyes and long eyelashes and a smile that lights up his whole face when it appears upon his face. His face is expressive and he has a hard time hiding his feelings from his face and demeanour. He keeps his nails short and wears mostly black and other dark colours. Even in the summer season one rarely sees him without a shirt. He has freckles on his face and often wears his hair tied in some way to keep it away from his face while he works.

Personality
Joel tries his best to not be noticed. He keeps his head bowed and does his work silently. In fact, he rarely speaks unless spoken to. He is peaceful most of the time, but he is not without emotions that can flare him into actions that he may regret later. His trust needs to be earned and so does his loyalty. But Joel is someone who expects to be betrayed and cast aside like he is nothing. He is a man of his word but does not expect others to be that way. He is helpful to those in need of aid, usually. He has a deep hatred towards those who prey on the weak and vulnerable.
Joel secretly worships Vita like many other humans and he firmly believes in equality. He secretly wishes for a new era where everyone is on an equal footing, himself included. He has a fighter’s heart and even though he has been through a lot of pain and sorrow in his life, his spirit still remains strong. Bowing his head comes easy to him, but bowing from his heart does not.
Joel is patient and has a way with horses. He is gentle with animals and that gentleness can extend to people as well, depending on the situation. Yet his hands are bloodied and his heart bleeding. He has PTSD that can be triggered at inconvenient times and he often has troubles sleeping through the night because of nightmares. Which is why he tries to push himself to his limits by working hard during days, so he would pass out for the night from sheer exhaustion. And animals - horses especially - come first to him. Their comfort before his own.
Backstory
Joel was born in Ballast into a family with a long history in both archery and horse training. His father, Noel Archer was married to Nora Nordin, but Joel’s mother was actually a woman called Julia Blue. Julia and Nora were as close as sisters, so when it became evident that Nora could not have children of her own, they came up with the plan that Julia would give her a child instead. Julia was not married and in fact she was a devious piece of work who was actually after Noel. However, Noel only agreed to sleep with her after his wife persuaded him into it.
Nine months later Julia gave birth to Joel. But then she started to blackmail the married couple, using the baby as the weapon. If Noel wouldn’t sleep with her and be with her, then she would take the baby and run. By this time Julia was living with the Archers and the situation in the house grew more and more toxic. Julia’s plan was to take Nora’s place as the wife and she used many ways to try and pursue her evil plan. Yet the tolerance of the usually peaceful Noel came to an end eventually. He kicked Julia away from their house, keeping the child to himself and his wife as had been the plan he had agreed to in the first place.
However, Julia wanted vengeance. She lulled the family into a false sense of security only to appear back in their lives 12 years later. And she had been busy. And she was not alone. She had banded together with some criminals and they attacked the farm house one night, burning down everything. Joel was taken captive, even though he tried to resist, but his skills of defending himself at that age were not very good yet.
Julia revealed to him who his true mother was and expected Joel to just accept it and be an obedient little son to her. However, he rebelled against her in everything and tried to escape from their hideout multiple times, until he was finally violently forced into obedience. He was held captive, yet as his obedience grew from the violence that was inflicted upon him, he slowly started to gain more freedoms within the gang of ruffians. He was told to make himself useful, so he ended up doing chores for the gang. But he gained the favour of the leader when he managed to calm down the man’s horse after something had spooked the fiery stallion.
After that he was treated with more respect and he was only 15 at the time. His new task was to take care of the horses of the gang and eventually they started to teach him martial arts and combat skills. He excelled in knife fighting and archery.
But Julia watched all this happening with a darkening heart. He was possessive of the boy and wanted him all to herself. Years had not been kind to her and she was mentally unstable and even more vicious and cunning than before. There was a darkness in her heart and eventually she became sure that only Joel could heal her. So, one night she lured Joel out into the woods and there she tried to attack him in a way no mother should.
Joel, however, had a mistrust in his heart against Julia and he had taken his knife with him just in case. And as his mother attacked him, Joel defended himself. Her blood soaked his hands and he fled. With nothing but his knife with him, Joel started to live off the land and slowly made his way around Anaxas. He experienced many adventures in the years that went by, he saw the world and learned to be kind to those in need of aid - for kindness was often what saved him, too. Sometimes he was able to find jobs involving horses and sometimes he even whored himself out, but life seemed to have something against him as oftentimes things went sour and he was forced to search for another place to call home.
Eventually he made his way to Old Rose Harbor. And there he has been for the last 5 years. He managed to get a job as a stable hand from one of the wealthier people in the city. He does his work, keeps his head down and tries to stay out of trouble the best he can. Yet, there is fire in his heart that has yet to be tamed.
