Physical Description

Image

Nauleth is on the taller end of things for an Anaxi galdor at 5'7", lanky and pale. He represents his Anaxi origins well with rich red hair and freckles, and his delicate, aristocratic features are accentuated by almond-shaped green-blue eyes, rimmed with the typical golden hue. Naul once considered himself quite the handsome prize, dashing smile and all. He has a strong jaw and high cheekbones, and while he's not soft by any means, the galdor has never known physical labor outside of sporting leisure and has no concept of combat outside of magical dueling.

Due to a severe backlash moment in his youth, the left side of Naul's face moves just noticeably slower than the right, with the corner of his mouth and his left eyebrow not reacting in correct time to his facial expressions. His left eye blinks a few milliseconds after his right and he favors his right side in all physical activity, though he doesn't limp and it's all certainly more obvious to himself than to anyone else. The extent of nerve damage from his backlash in his 5th year is such that when he casts, he always experiences a bit of dull, tingling along the left side of his body, mostly his face, regardless of his spell.

Theory has it he permanently damaged his own ley lines, but he has not noticed any particular difference in the power levels of his magic. Of course, he's never quite decided to experiment with Anima magic and push his personal limitations quite far enough to conclusively find out, either.

The young Siordanti dresses according to his more-than-comfortable galdor status, though perhaps in the rather average and casual spectrum whenever possible. He tends to be a season or two behind in fashion because his mind is far more occupied with monic will and magic theory than what he should be putting on his person at any given moment in time. His ginger hair is usually tousled and messy, his clothing occasionally unpressed and wrinkled, for the galdor either doesn't care or doesn't take the time to worry about making a real impression in everyday life—not to his professor peers and not to his wide-eyed young students. He was once the student in trouble for never buttoning the collar of his uniform coat, having an untucked shirt, or otherwise breaking formal dress rules. He has changed very little.

He can be arsed to actually focus on such things for faculty gatherings and events, but he usually requires several reminders, if not actual assistance.
Personality

Image

Nauleth can best be described as the aloof but enthusiastic intellectual shoved into a professor's job—awkward, deep-thinking, and occasionally flustered. He also has very little patience for decorum, far too comfortable being the crass junior professor in a board meeting, much to his total lack of chagrin.

In his younger years, he was once a contemptuous but vibrant young bully, indiscriminate in his childish cruelty. Now, as a young adult, one could say his social skills have improved along with his generosity toward others, but he still struggles greatly when in the classroom surrounded by his pupils to properly express things such as mercy and kindness. He is enthusiastic but judgmental, curious but selfish, and he weighs his approval of individuals based on their ability to keep up with his thought process. He is an easier creature to get along with in a one-on-one situation, for the pressures of group interaction seem to exacerbate his somewhat grating demeanor. Many a student has left his classroom teary-eyed and confused only to end up in his office and receive both an apology and a much more personal, gentler explanation to their question.

One could say that Naul is a changed man, and his rebirth of self began shortly after suffering severe backlash from a brailing accident during a duel on the lawn. He spent his later years as a student quiet, friendless, and focused on the passions of his studies. Self-isolation and self-consciousness drove him to disappear into himself for several years until a particular professor managed to get through a chink in his armor and open him up a little. Slowly, his previous passion for making others miserable matured and grew into a passion for discovery which in turn blossomed into a desire to share such discoveries with others. In conversation, this means that Naul is usually not the first to talk and has a tendency to not express himself as fully as he'd like. Still, his confidence is a strange beast—both heavily present and yet also skittish—and he often comes across as haughty or full of himself when he's really just reacting poorly to any given situation. He swears a bit too much than is becoming for a professor, and somewhat prides himself on being able to drink at least one of his roommates under the table when the four of them wander the bars of The Stacks during their rare moments of leisure.

Where he was once aggressive and never one to shy away from a fight, he is still unafraid (and perhaps even still more than a little enthusiastic) to take up a duel, if only to defend the pride he has in his intellectual achievements. He still struggles with friendships, competitive and haughty, but at the same time, he longs for acceptance, which is really what led him to be a bully in the first place. He has the potential to be caring, but he's never particularly had a reason to be kind, especially not in the cut-throat race of academia and theoretical achievement. Instead of his backlash incident turning him more malicious, it may have softened his edge a bit but he has had to develop all of his social skills on the fly over the recent years. Imperfect but genuine in his efforts, Nauleth can't be faulted for trying at least.

Naul feels as though magic study and discovery are his calling. He is most at home pushing the limits of galdori understanding of the mona, and his perspective and relationship with magic has shifted almost entirely full-circle since his backlash incident. He'd rather spend time in a library or on the Lawn experimenting than in the classroom, but he's accepted his position with reluctant hopefulness, somewhat convinced his own experiences can help to turn young 5th-year students from his same previous path of self-destruction.

Racial Opinions

The young Siordanti is very much a galdor when it comes to social and racial opinions—galdori are the superior race, passives are dangerous, wick are halfbreed vermin, and humans are only begrudgingly tolerable. Nauleth is not cruel but he is also not sympathetic. He believes that the mona have placed the galdori where they should be in social order, given their superior magic abilities. Perhaps because of his intellectual curiosities and theoretical mind, he doesn't find passives repulsive so much as an interesting oddity. Afraid of them only because of his cultural upbringing, he is a rare galdor because he finds mistreatment of them foolish—both because they are dangerous and also because they still share the same heritage, broken or not. He keeps his unusual opinions to himself, however, and is still quick to mistrust a wick and abuse his status around a servant.

He is not particularly religious but pays proper homage to the Circle Gods, especially Ailoe, Anaxas' patron Goddess.

Personality

INTP | The Logician
INTPs are known for their brilliant theories and unrelenting logic – in fact, they are considered the most logically precise of all the personality types. Usually known as the philosopher, the architect, or the dreamy professor, INTPs have been responsible for many scientific discoveries throughout history. They love patterns, and spotting discrepancies between statements could almost be described as a hobby, making it a bad idea to lie to an INTP. This makes it ironic that INTPs’ word should always be taken with a grain of salt – it’s not that they are dishonest, but people with the INTP personality type tend to share thoughts that are not fully developed, using others as a sounding board for ideas and theories in a debate against themselves rather than as actual conversation partners.

Backstory

Image

Born to a high-ranking politician in Vienda and the eldest of three children, Nauleth was always under pressure to follow n his father's footsteps into aristocratic and governmental glory. The Siordanti name has been well-known in Anaxas and throughout the Ten Kingdoms for their political contributions. He grew up in a competitive household, learning quickly to best his siblings in any way possible to win the attention from his busy parents, trying desperately for opportunities to travel with his father across the Kingdom and beyond by airship. Approval and one-upping became an important part of his understanding of how the galdori world worked, accentuated by the brilliant mind that quickly blossomed for Naul even before his entrance to Brunnhold. He scored high on his entrance exam, setting himself up for high expectations and performance pressures that proved themselves quickly crippling to the curious, enthusiastic but admittedly poorly guided young galdor.

Once a student, he quickly applied his competitive childhood in the classroom. Basically, he became a very effective and feared bully, his hunger for acceptance and his too-busy mind producing an aggression he was too young to understand in an environment that fueled the fire instead of sought to focus it correctly. While he maintained excellent performance in the classroom, he was often disciplined for his malice and purposeful targeting of other students, particularly those he considered weaker than himself. He never really made friends in his earliest years, just cronies. He figured that was just how life was supposed to be and it was acceptable at the time.

Near the end of his 5th year, however, everything changed. While "dueling" (read: bullying) a particularly stubborn and magically talented young man from his class, he brailed a spell when a professor appeared to break up the obvious "fight." The spell backlashed terribly—one could say that Nauleth honestly had it coming, for despite his high intellect, his relationship with the mona was not entirely sincere—and he was left unconscious. When he woke, the school doctors had managed to heal the damaged nerves of the left side of his face, but they still felt slow and occasionally tingly to him. His mistake had left him a reminder of his overstepping, and from that day, he knew he could no longer simply be a bully, that he had to find a way to crawl out of the whole he'd dug with his own selfishness.

He quickly became the target of whispering disapproval, on the Lawn teasing, and practical jokes that lost him his "friends" and gave those he had bullied an opportunity for their own revenge. Retreating into himself and his studies, Nauleth faded into the library, into his notes, and began to quietly rebuild his relationship with the mona and kindle his passion for experimenting and exploring his magical limitations instead of worrying about the opinions of his peers. His passion and brilliance was eventually recognized by a professor or two, and one in particular carefully, slowly, coaxed the young galdor out of his shell. The two became friends and by the time his graduation grew near, Naul was curious about continuing his studies as well as teaching—a huge change from his former self.

Now a research assistant, graduate student, and junior professor, the young Siordanti still struggles in the classroom—his peers have graduated and moved on, leaving him in front of young galdori just as selfish and lost as he once was.

He has more or less lost touch with his parents after his brailing accident, finding himself adrift from his family and yet somehow still financially supported. While his father doesn't talk to him, perhaps for political reasons, he still seems to have no qualms about funding his intelligent son. It's a strange relationship to be sure, but this year Naul will also be teaching his youngest sister in his classroom, even though they haven't spoken in years.

Housing: City Dweller Pack | Custom

Nauleth is a junior professor for Brunnhold University and lives in The Stacks, though his walk is a little farther than most on purpose, choosing to live on the outskirts of the little university town just for the yard and the exercise.

He has a small apartment (once a room in the house) to himself on the second floor of a block of houses-turned-apartments. The large house is home to three other galdori whom Naul considers his genuine friends and peers: another junior professor, and two research assistants, all four of the young men graduate students. They share a kitchen and two washrooms, have one human servant who lives in the basement for cleaning and cooking, and tend to go get guttered together like proper young creatures after a big exam or perceived achievement.

Naul's room has a comfortable bed, a desk and chair, two bookshelves, an armoire, and a stove for warmth.

Inventory

Naul is financially supported by his father, though he has no contact with parents and barely any contact with his siblings who are Brunnhold students, as his family hasn't directly spoken to him since his brailing incident in his 5th year. It's been 8 years, but somehow he still finds himself always more than generously provided for.

Clothing
Naul has an assortment of mix-and-match outfits that are clearly last season or later in terms of fashion sense. He prefers earth tones and blues, suspenders, fine fabric and freedom of movement. Most of his clothing is usually a little wrinkled or otherwise unkempt.

Personal Effects
Leather-bound notebook of spell notes, random projects, student lesson plans, grades, etc. all seemingly disorganized to anyone else but himself.
Set of Toiletries (a comb, razor, tooth brush, toothpaste)
Set of theoretical books on Physical Magic
Set of theoretical books on Quantitative Magic
Several blank books, ink, quills, and such for writing

Heirloom
Very nice pocket watch from his mother, engraved on the back with the constellation of his name.

Career and Income

Occupation: Junior Professor

In some cruel twist of fate, Nauleth is currently a Junior Professor, teaching Physical Magic to pre-6th Form Brunnhold students.

He possesses a very strong understanding of Physical and Quantitative Magic, monic will, magical theory, and has impressive research skills. His classroom manners leave much to be desired, as he often struggles to communicate his lesson plans effectively and tends to be nervous in front of the blackboard. He prefers to educate by demonstration and is that professor who drags everyone out to the Lawn, rain or shine, snow or heat, in order to force his 5th-year students to actually use their abilities in order to make discoveries.

Income: Average

Nauleth wants for very little as the eldest of the Siordanti family, especially once he managed to graduate with more than respectable accolades and has chosen to continue his studies as well as teach at the most prestigious sorcery institutions in all of the Six Kingdoms. The galdor has never known personal hardship, cannot empathize with those in need, and expects to be waited on as is appropriate to his station in life by the lower races, but as a junior professor, his income is nothing to brag about, not that he spends much of it, ferreting most of his earnings away into savings. His biggest expense? Replacing clothes ruined practicing or experimenting on the Field of Practical Application.

Goals

Image

Once Naul was very much at risk of wasting his life after graduation, he has now found a sense of purpose in theoretical research and teaching. He would begrudgingly admit he enjoys his time in the classroom, stimulating younger minds to think outside of their own selfish worlds and begin to open up to the mona, to explore their galdor-given abilities to the fullest.

He would like to make discoveries—something legacy-worthy—in magical theory or about the mona itself. He'd like to start with his true name, of course, but anything else noteworthy in a textbook for the ages is a clocking bonus.

He wouldn't mind some sense of approval from his family, though that would require speaking to them.

He's not opposed to friends or a more personal relationship or even a family of his own one day, but he's far too convinced that he's not socially capable enough for such things.
