Physical Description

Image

The first thing that people notice about Cecelia is her deep brown eyes. They give the impression of someone who is always watching the world, taking in everything and turning it into knowledge she can use. But they also have a kindness to them, which makes people trust her. She may have a lot of knowledge about the world, but she would never misuse it to hurt her fellow humans.

Cecelia is petite, but her body is hardly slender. She has curves that most people would find attractive and muscles that were built up by years of hard work. She may currently have an "easy" job as a secretary, but growing up poor in Vienda as a cook’s daughter meant that she had to work hard from a young age. It wasn’t unusual to see Cecelia lugging around a bag of rice or potatoes that was almost as heavy as she was. Until she married her husband Aldwin, she spent many years doing odd jobs, some of them involving physical labor. Even when Aldwin’s income allowed Cecelia to move to jobs that were more well-paying and less labor-intensive, Cecelia never let her body go soft.

Cecelia can almost always be seen with a serious look on her face. She’s aware of her responsibilities and takes them very seriously. But when she smiles, her whole face lights up. Those smiles can be seen most reliably when she’s interacting with her daughter, Galiya. It’s clear that she adores the girl.

Cecelia takes pride in her appearance and ensures that she’s always clean and her skin is always clear and well-kept. If she has spare money, she might invest in a bit of lipstick, but she is proud of her dark skin and prefers to let it shine on its own. She also takes pride in her clothing and won’t hesitate to spend a little more on a pretty skirt if it’s well-made and will clearly last a long while.

Cecelia usually keeps her hair closely shorn and will almost always be found with a headscarf on. On the rare occasions where she chooses to grow her hair out, her hair grows into tight, kinky curls.
Personality

Image

Cecelia is a serious person, someone who gives the impression that they have the world on their shoulders and they’re well aware that the slightest misstep will bring everything down. Cecelia deals with being mistreated stoically, choosing to vent her frustration and anger only to trusted friends. Her stoicism extends to her other emotions – she’s not the type to publicly expose her grief, for example. When she breaks down, you can be assured that it’s been a long time coming.

Because of her past, Cecelia is hesitant to trust people. But once she starts opening up, she’s very kind and motherly. She has no trouble nagging people to take care of themselves or even forcing them to sit down and eat a good meal. She’s warm and loving to people that she calls friends, even if it might take her a while to consider you a true friend. This doesn't mean she's not friendly, though. She is quick to help someone if they need help and can be a very chatty person. It's just that she doesn't talk about her feelings or past often.

Cecelia is fiercely intelligent and seeks knowledge however and whenever she can. She reads newspapers religiously and doesn’t hesitate to listen to gossip. But she’s also tight-lipped and any gossip she hears is unlikely to be spread.

Cecelia is also deeply practical. She’s the type of person who can stretch 4 or 5 simple ingredients into a tasty meal that can last for days and she always manages to pinch scraps and hats so tight they squeak. But she’s not necessarily a miserly person. She’s also someone who understands that paying a little more for something that’s of better quality than means that it will save her money in the long run.

If you want a hard worker, someone who will spend extra time making sure that their job is done perfectly, Cecelia is who you need to hire. She’s happy to do supportive work that will ensure that her employer shines and is able to continue the business or perhaps even expand it. She will be the one in the kitchen late at night doing prep work for the next day or the one who stays a few hours after the office closes so she can go over an article for the next day with a fine-toothed comb, checking its grammar and information closely. She gets teased on occasion for being a slow worker, but she knows that going slowly and ensuring that the work is done properly is better than throwing out slapdash work that will potentially embarrass her employer.

Cecelia is devoted to Galiya and always puts her needs first. Before she started working for Rina, it wasn't unusual to find her sewing up the 15th hole in her work skirt while Galiya wore a brand-new nightgown. Her work as a secretary paid her well enough that she could take care of Galiya with relative ease. Of course, as a human, access to things like doctors are a bit out of her reach, but after losing Jasper, she’s determined to save up enough money that she won’t have to worry about taking Galiya to at least an apothecary if needed. Luckily, this all changed when she started working for Rina.

Lastly, Cecelia is prone to depression and, while she's resilient and it takes a lot to knock her down, it may take her a while to get back up if she has been knocked down.
Past & Present History

Born and raised in Vienda, Cecelia moved to Brunnhold in 2716 to escape the memory of her dead husband and stillborn son. She worked as a secretary to a number of different employers throughout the years, eventually spending 2 years at the Vienda Weekly's Brunnhold office. The galdori in the office treated her as if she were a particularly well-trained circus animal, but the pay was good enough that she had to tolerate their condescension and superiority complexes so she, her daughter Galiya, and her roommate Sednai wouldn't have to live from paycheck-to-paycheck.

When she saw the advertisement for a live-in personal secretary for a galdor student, she thought it sounded too good to be true. Free room and board? Uniform and a small off-duty wardrobe provided? A stipend included? No galdor would offer those sorts of things to a human. But management had changed at the office and her new supervisor was much less friendly towards Cecelia and the other human employees. Not only was he antagonistic towards humans, but he thought that Cecelia and her human coworkers were too well-paid. Cecelia saw the writing on the wall and knew that she would eventually be out of work, if only so her new supervisor can hire someone at a lower wage, so she took the leap and applied for the job.

Cecelia met her soon-to-be employer, Rina Salifa, and was bemused to realize that the listing was indeed accurate. Rina explained that her parents had hoped that hiring a personal secretary would keep Rina's grades from slipping as she prepared to enter the world of galdori university politics. Rina didn't seem particularly enthused about her future job as a university liaison, but her parents thought that having someone to handle the tedious aspects of being a galdori politician and socialite – things such as responding to lecture invitations and managing money – would make the job more tolerable.

Rina was also slightly more egalitarian than other Anaxi galdori, having had 2 fathers who were from Mugroba. She didn't believe that humans and wicks should have full equality, of course. Rina like to push boundaries, but there were some things that even she wasn't comfortable with. But she did respect Cecelia for her intelligence and didn't treat her as if she was lower than mud simply because she couldn't Converse with the mona.

When Cecelia explained that she had a daughter who would have to live with her, she expected Rina to balk at the idea of hiring her. But Rina decided to take a chance and meet Galiya since Rina's butler was reaching an age where he was wanting to retire and Cecelia had other experience that might make her a good butler-in-training. The meeting went well enough that Cecelia and Galiya moved into Rina's house in early 2720.
