Physical Description

Image

Orianna is a petite woman, standing at 5 feet flat. She’s slender, but not overly thin. It’s obvious that she’s never had to worry about where she’s going to get her next meal.

Her skin is a soft tawny color and her piercing hazel eyes rest over well-defined cheekbones and a nose sprinkled with freckles. When she’s at work, she keeps her hair in a tight braid, but her curly cinnamon hair is usually either free or tied back in a low bun when she’s off-duty. If she’s going to a formal event – which, admittedly, is pretty rare for her – she’ll pull it up into either a braided bun or a braided crown.

She usually favors prefers the sleeveless dresses and jewel tones of her native Mugrobi, though she will wear a long-sleeved overshirt when she’s on duty. She rarely has reason to dress fancy, but her formal dresses are elaborately colored and embroidered, practically wearable tapestries.

She rarely wears makeup, seeing it as pointless to “dress up” for a job where she could end up covered in blood. If she’s going to a formal event, she might wear a bit of rouge and lip stain, but otherwise, she doesn’t bother.

The only jewelry she wears, outside of hair jewelry, is a hammered and etched Mugrobi bracelet made of copper on her left wrist. It's 2 inches wide and has "To my beloved daughter on her entrance into Brunnhold. You make me proud, my love." in Mugrobi engraved on the inside of the bracelet. The bracelet is not a full circle, which allowed her to adjust its size as she grew. She always wears this.

Orianna has a small tattoo of an abstract circle of fish on her left shoulderblade.
Personality

Image

Orianna is, in many ways, a typical Mugrobi Galdor. Her father, Damodara Sardiva Elpha Aubelland, was Mugrobi and taught her that, while humans and wicks were "lesser races", they were to be treated with dignity and respect. Passives were just crippled Galdori. While he didn’t precisely encourage her to befriend humans and wicks, he didn’t punish her harshly when she was friendly towards them. He openly encouraged her to make friends with passives, though.

Her mother Elisabetta, on the other hand, is pure Anaxi Galdor. She spent Orianna’s first few university years attempting to teach Orianna how to be a “proper” Galdor. Since Orianna was desperate for her mother’s love, some of the lessons took. But her father’s lessons luckily tempered most of what Elisabetta tried to teach Orianna, much to Elisabetta's disgust.

As a result, Orianna can sometimes seem like two people when dealing with people of other races. With humans, she’s generous and caring, but in a condescending way. But, if a human displeases her, she doesn’t hesitate to retaliate to put the human in their proper place. Her Anaxi mother impacted her racial viewpoints enough that she does not believe that humans should be granted full independence, though she's ambivalent on whether they should have a say in their own governance.

Orianna dislikes wicks because of what happened to her father, though her views have softened sightly since she moved to Vienda. .

She’s kindly towards passives as she grew up as friends with some of her father's employed passives. She is a quiet supporter of the SPE and, unbeknownst to anyone but a very select few, she smuggled out the occasional passive who's been treated extremely badly by Anaxi Galdori when she worked in Brunnhold. With the help of her brother, Demkaih, she got them to Mugroba, where they could live freely. She regretted that she couldn't get more of them out before she was forced to move to Vienda.

She’s generally pleasant-tempered and laidback, but there’s fire under that calm exterior. She’s slow to change and being pushed to change at a faster pace than her natural one will get her back up. She’s likely to dig her feet in and double down if pushed to change. She knows who she is and is resolute in staying true to herself. She’s also someone who takes no bullshit and doesn’t beat around the bushes if something needs to be said. Tact is not her strong suit.

Orianna has dedicated herself to the healing arts and truly finds joy in helping people. She's always experimenting and trying new herbal mixtures, figuring out new ways to enhance her herbs, and learning new surgical techniques.

Orianna doesn’t care much about socializing and her singular focus on the healing arts tends to put any potential suitors off. Generally, she's perfectly fine spending time by herself with her hingles. She's very introverted and her work often leaves her emotionally drained.

Orianna is very religious, going through the kofi har ceremony when she can and attending temple once a week. She sees her healing duties as a sacred duty done in Hulali's name. Her deep-held belief in the sacredness of all life has strengthened which has resulted in a slow softening of her opinions towards the other races, especially as she's been exposed to the horrors that take place in the factories of Vienda.
Backstory

Orianna’s parents were as different as could be, the result of an arranged marriage between the Penbroneth and Aubellard families. The Penbroneth family was in dire need of financial help and it just happened that the Aubellard family wanted to expand their spice and medicinal herb company into Anaxas. The Aubellard family moved into a handful of buildings owned by the Penbroneths and turned them into spice shops and apothecaries. In return for being allowed to use the shops, they paid a certain amount of profits to the Penbroneths as yearly rent. This allowed the Aubellard family to expand into Anaxas without excessive upfront costs while giving the Penbroneths the money they needed to stay afloat.

The match was a poor one, to say the least. Elisabetta Penbroneth was used to being spoiled and had a sadistic streak, especially when dealing with any of the “lesser races”. Damodara Sardiva Elpha Aubelland was a kind-hearted person, who just saw the “lesser races” as children that needed guidance. This ended up being a major wedge in their relationship and Elisabetta chose to leave Mugroba and go back to her family’s estate in Anaxas when Orianna was three, as Damodara refused to isolate Orianna from the "lesser races" and raise her as a "proper" Galdori. Since Elisabetta never wanted children in the first place, Orianna was left behind in Mugroba.

Orianna’s childhood was a happy one. She loved her father and her father loved her. He was kind and gentle, treating her like she was a princess. She had many passive friends and even some human friends. She had a much older brother, Demkaih, from her father’s first marriage, and Damodara was equally kind with Dem. (Dem's mother, Esma, died when he was very young.) But Damodara always made sure that both of his children knew that their status meant that they were responsible for helping the lower races.

Damodara not only talked about helping the lower races, but he worked to ensure that he was actually helping them out. He was very religious and felt it was his holy duty, as a servant of Hulali, to nourish the lower races and help them grow, the way Hulali nourishes the world. He employed passives, humans, and wicks to run the shops where his spices and herbs were sold, including apothecary shops. He always made sure that his employees had the health care they needed, even if it dipped into his profits a bit. He said it was a good investment in his business to keep the employees healthy and, most importantly, it would be what Hulali wanted.

When it was time to test Orianna, she tested at 4.2. Damodara insisted on sending Orianna to Brunnhold, like her brother before her. Dem had 2 more years until he was finished with his studies and his presence helped Orianna greatly when she struggled with the culture shock. Despite the age difference, Dem and Orianna were thick as thieves.

Elisabetta suddenly took an interest in Orianna’s life once the girl was in university, feeling it was her duty to teach Orianna how to be a “proper” Galdor. The two of them clashed more often than not, Orianna's stubbornness about the fact that the "lesser races" deserved things like basic dignity and respect easily matching Elisabetta's stubbornness about her belief that they were animals who barely deserved to live. (Rumor has it that, if Elisabetta had her way, she would happily help in the genocide of all the lower races.)

Elisabetta gave up trying to "educate" Orianna about her proper place above the "lesser races" once Orianna showed significant talent in Living Conversation, hoping instead that the girl's talent would make her interesting enough for a well-to-do Galdor to be court her. She knew there were progressive Galdori in Anaxas and, while she was personally disgusted with them, she would be willing to marry off her daughter to them if it would further her desire to be treated like the queen she thought she was.

Much to Elisabetta’s dismay, Orianna insisted on going back to Mugroba whenever possible. This was another reason that Elisabetta gave up on "educating" Orianna. During Orianna's visits home, she would learn more about her father’s business. She was never going to be the one to inherit the business – that privilege went to Demkaih. But her father felt that it was important for her to know everything about the business – how the herbs and spices were grown, where they were sourced from, how they were used, and so on. Every summer, Damodara arranged for Orianna to help with a different aspect of the business. One summer, she interned in the apothecary, while the next summer found her traveling with her father to pick up more stock. The summer after that found her doing rounds on the farms that her father sourced their spices and medicinal herbs from, listening to the farmers explain what each medicinal herb and spice needed to grow healthy and strong.

Once Orianna's talent for Living Conversation was discovered, she quickly found that using her talents to heal others was her passion. She ended up focusing almost completely on learning Living Conversation, taking nothing more than the required courses on the other Conversations. She learned how to use her magic to nurture and heal both plants and animals. As she progressed through school, she started using her winter breaks to intern and train with various healers and professors.

Two years before Orianna’s graduation, tragedy struck. Damodara’s caravan was attacked by a group of Tashwa and everyone was killed. Orianna was devastated.

As stated in the contract that was signed when Damodara and Elisabetta’s marriage was arranged, the Aubelland business went to Orianna’s older brother, Demkaih. One of Dem’s first orders of business was to reduce the flow of money to Elisabetta down to a trickle. Elisabetta was livid when she discovered that she would no longer have access to the wealth that the Aubellard family had. Her ridiculously lavish lifestyle suddenly became a comfortably rich lifestyle. What infuriated her even more was that Dem decided it was his duty to ensure that Orianna wasn’t struggling financially. Of course, Dem pointed out that he was forced to step in when Elisabetta claimed her family was too poor to help Orianna, but Elisabetta refused to acknowledge that she had made her own bed and now had to sleep in it.

Elisabetta resumed pressuring Orianna to learn how to become a "proper" Galdori and to be well-wed, leading to Orianna to threaten to have Dem cut Elisabetta off completely if she didn't back off. This effectively resulted in the destruction of their relationship.

Orianna felt nothing but relief.

Orianna considered leaving school to go help Demkaih out with the business. But Dem insisted that Orianna finish her studies, telling her she needed to explore her talent and assuring her that he could keep the business running. Since Orianna knew that their father had been training Dem as intensely as he trained her, Orianna trusted Dem. Indeed, Dem was a successful businessman and the Aubellard family business kept growing slowly but surely. By the time Orianna graduated from Brunnhold, Demkaih had opened the company’s first storefront in Hox.

After graduating Brunnhold, Dem asked Orianna where she wanted to live. Orianna had spent her entire university degree being appalled at how non-Galdori were treated in Anaxas, so her answer to Dem’s inquiry came quickly – she would stay in Brunnhold, running an apothecary shop and using her skill in Living Conversation to enhance her treatments while she got training to become a doctor. After she finished her training as a doctor, she would start a medical clinic for humans and passives. Dem bought a building in the Stacks and Orianna moved in quickly. But Orianna was proud and insisted that the money he wanted to give her for startup supplies be given in the form of a loan.

(Dem was smart enough to not ask why she said she wouldn't treat Wicks. He knew that Orianna had taken their father's death particularly hard. At the time, he was old enough to understand that the Tashwa were just another risk that needed to be considered when running a caravan through Mugroba and didn't fault the whole race for what they had done to his and Orianna's father.)

Orianna’s business was slow to get off the ground. It seemed that the humans in the Stacks preferred to go to human apothecaries rather than Galdori ones and the Galdori just preferred to go to the hospital for help. But she was good at what she did and, over time, word spread among both humans and Galdori that Orianna was a gentle, well-trained apothecary whose treatments were very effective. The fact that she held free clinics for 2 houses every other 10th helped get the word out and build her clientele, also.

The next 6 years passed quickly, Dem expanding the Aubelland company while Orianna ran her apothecary shop. She also spent time taking classes at Brunnhold, always working to expand her range of skills and talents. She received her medical degree at age 24, right on schedule. She then entered an advanced surgical residency for 2 years to receive her specialist certificate. She was quite surprised when she was offered a junior teaching position in surgery at the Brunnhold hospital upon graduation, but quickly accepted the offer as she felt that teaching surgery would help more people in the long run. She cut back on her hours at the apothecary shop and hired an apprentice. She also scrapped her plans to open a medical clinic so she could accommodate the class she was assigned every term and her on-duty shifts at the hospital.

After a backlash caused by working herself to the point of sickness and a visit to her brother Demkaih in early 2719, Demkaih put his foot down. He would no longer help her with her apothecary business if she stayed in Brunnhold and continued teaching. He was deeply worried about Anna's health and, after some introspection, Anna realized he had every right to be worried. So, reluctantly, Anna resigned her position at the Brunnhold Public Hospital, passed the Brunnhold Aubellard Apothecary shop on to her former apprentice, and moved to Vienda to start a new branch of the Aubellard Apothecary business. Her brother bought a building in the Painted Ladies to be converted into the new branch of the apothecary, but told Anna that she would have to find her own place to live until she proves she can maintain a healthy work/life existence.

In Hamas 2719, Anna opened her shop up in Vienda. She's spent her time since then working on building up clientele and training her apprentice. She's one of a number of doctors on call for one of the corporations that owns a number of factories and her opinions on how factory workers should be treated has slowly pulled her out of her conservative golly viewpoints.

Average: Anna spends her money on supplies and rent, even though she gets a slight family discount on her herbs from her brother. She also works on-call for a corporation that runs a number of factories in Vienda, but her free clinics every other week keep her from reaching wealthy status.

Housing and Inventory

Shop

• One wall to wall shelving area
• Four island style shelving areas
• One set of scales
• One 100 sq ft area of work used as an apothecary lab
• One apprentice

Orianna's shop is modest, with interior walls that are painted a soft blue. The shelves and counters are well-kept. The wall behind the counter has an elaborate Mugrobi tapestry on it, but that's the only decoration in the shop. There are a couple of comfortable chairs and a coffee table kept by the door for customers who have to wait.

Housing

Anna rents a small apartment in Uptown. Her apartment has little décor, as Orianna has never been much into having things for the sake of having them. The ceiling lowers a bit over her bed. There's a spot above the stove that leaks slightly when it rains, but Orianna hasn't gotten around to hiring someone to fix the roof. There's also a small alcove reserved for kofi har ceremonies.

Goals

Long-term goals:
• Establish a network of independent healers and apothecaries
• Overthrow the Anaxi system of dealing with passives
• Further magical studies and become an Advanced user of Living Conversation
