Physical Description

The first thing most people notice about Rina is that she's in a wheelchair. Her wheelchair is built with a solid wood frame with wicker for the back and seat. Cushions line the back and seat, also. The cushions are removable and kept in with buckles. Unlike most wheelchairs, her chair has a crank that allows her to recline if necessary to ease the chronic pain resulting from being caught in a diablerie when she was 12. She can stand or even walk for short periods of time (<20 minutes or so on good days) but, for the most part, she is confined to her wheelchair.

When standing, Rina is slightly shorter than an average galdor, at 5'2". Her body shape is very curvy and always has been, though people sometimes assume that her curves are nothing but fat resulting from being confined to a wheelchair. She has dealt with teasing because of her weight, but as she's gotten more comfortable with herself, it's gotten easier to ignore the bullying. Her arms are much more toned than the rest of her due to years of rolling her cart along.

Rina's hair is black and extremely curly. She wears her hair usually free, letting it live to its fluffiest potential. If she feels like pulling it up, she will wear it in twin buns towards the side of her head or a single, high bun.

She's very into cosmetics, and rarely is seen without at least lipstick and eyeliner on. Usually, though, she is fully made up, as she finds makeup empowering. She takes excellent care of her copper skin, and it's always glowing. Her love of makeup has led many to call her vain but, really, she's into makeup simply because it's fun. She was a very active child and enjoyed spending time outside and playing sports, but the diablerie took that away from her. Makeup and clothing gave some of that sense of fun back.

When Rina's not in her Brunnhold uniform, she's wearing clothes of all types. She tends to lean towards Mugrobi-style clothing in the warmer months. In the winter months, she supplements body-covering Anaxi-style clothing with layers of blankets. She often tailors the color of her clothing to her mood, wearing neutral colors for formal events or when she's a bit down, and wearing bright colors when she's in a good mood. All her clothes are of excellent quality, with elaborately embroidered fabrics. Her everyday clothing tends to be loose to help her personal care assistants put it on or take it off. Her formal clothing is more close-fitting, but she doesn't attend formal events often, so her assistants don't mind.

She tends to experiment with her makeup and clothing, wearing outrageous colors as often as neutrals or common colors.

Lastly, Rina has a lip piercing on her bottom lip, something that some people find quite scandalous. She usually takes it out when she's on school grounds or when she's going to be attending formal affairs.

Personality

Image

The three words that describe Rina best are vibrant, confident, and extroverted. She is the type of person who is always in the middle of a circle of friends, cracking jokes and telling stories. She makes friends wherever she goes and, when she lived on campus, went out of her way to help the first years get used to life away from their parents. She is unfailingly kind to her fellow galdori until they prove they are not worth her kindness. She has no issue with calling someone out if they're being an ersehole. She also has no problem meeting someone on the dueling field if they insist on taking things that far. She doesn't pick fights, but she will finish them if someone starts one with her.

Underneath Rina's surface personality, she struggles with anxiety, OCD, and panic attacks, though she's learned how to hide it well. This is a result of the psychological effect of being caught in a diablerie that permanently disabled her. She carries around small trinkets like beads on strips of fabric to count when she needs to calm herself down. She also carries herbal mixtures to take if she starts to have a panic attack. Her mental health was much more difficult to deal with when she was living on campus and was surrounded with passives. Her servants are aware of her mental health issues and what she needs to feel safe and keep her anxiety to a minimum.

She's also been bullied. Many people have used her disability, her skin color, or her supposed vanity against her. This makes her hesitant around new people if she meets them where there are not authorities that can intervene if things go too far, though her extroverted nature means that she quickly warms up to people. She tends to put on a front around authorities, assuming (often rightly) that they will underestimate and judge her because of her disability.

Rina is loved fiercely by her family and, as a result, loves the people in her inner circle fiercely. She will support them in their endeavors, while gently pointing out potential problems that need to be mitigated and helping them come up with ideas on how to fix them. She showers them in gifts and treats them like they're royalty because, to her, they are.

She treats her servants well, ensuring that they don't struggle to get what they need to survive. The servants that live with her get free room and board, instead of Rina taking room and board out of their pay. She also ensures they have uniforms to wear, along with a small wardrobe of good quality off-duty clothes to wear. Estella, her passive, even gets a small stipend, which was shocking to some of her schoolmates when they found out. But, while Rina is afraid of passives, her family raised her to treat them as if they were human or wicks, instead of treating them like slaves. It helps that Estella's diablerie is confirmed to be completely harmless.

She is a skilled clairvoyant, though she enjoys experimenting with different types of scrying. Her favorite is dripping wax in water and then interpreting the shapes, but she's experimented with a variation of tactile scrying involving wax. Her ultimate goal is to come up with a type of Incaustomancy that can be done with one person. She is extremely artistic, always sketching or doodling, and feels that there must be some way to incorporate that with her clairvoyant abilities.

As far as Rina's racial views go, she accepts the galdori race's place fully and easily. She is afraid of passives who don't have known, safe diableries. If she knows that a passive has a harmless diablerie, she treats them just like any other person -- with respect and kindness. Her accident convinced her that it might be best to segregate passives unless their diableries are proven to be safe for other people to experience, but she does not agree that they should be forced to be servants. Wicks and humans are seen as lesser beings than galdori, though she respects their skills.

Because of her bullying, she doesn't go out of her way to be malicious to anyone, even the lesser races. She sees bullying as an outward expression of deep insecurity and, since she's well-aware of and comfortable with her superior status, she does not feel the need to lash out at lesser creatures. She, unfortunately, will lash out at passives if she's exceedingly anxious or in a lot of pain, though. She shares the common Anaxi belief that stressing a passive can cause a diablerie, but she often finds that she can't help lashing out.

Backstory

Rina was born on a bright spring day to Aris Salafia, a politics professor at Brunnhold University, and Ejoaye pez Lyutse, a Mugrobi ambassador to Anaxas. Although there is deep love between Aris and Ejoaye, Aris wasn't interested in a romantic relationship. When Rina was 2, her father took a house husband, a textiles importer named Tabuwe Mulugeta pez Jotaku.

Rina's family is considered unconventional and, to some Anaxis, quite scandalous. Her family does not hide the fact that Ejoaye and Tabuwe are romantically involved and, often, all three of her parents will attend political functions if they're available. Aris is as uninterested in a romantic relationship with Tabuwe as she is with Ejoaye, but she is close friends with Tabuwe.

Rina is exceedingly close to Tabuwe, her ja, as he did most of the hands-on raising of Rina, since both Aris and Ejoaye were quite busy with their work. They, of course, had servants, tutors, and nannies, but Tabuwe made sure he came home every day, helped Rina with her homework, and ate dinner with her. He let his company partner take care of the business for Rina's first 5 years and only went back to running the business full-time once Rina was old enough to be trusted to the help.

This isn't to say that Rina isn't close to her biological parents. They weren't as big a part of her life growing up, but since she transferred back to Brunnhold, she has spent more and more time with them.

When Rina was tested, she was tested at a 7.7. Her parents decided to have her enrolled in Thul Ka University and, for the first 2 years, things went well. When she was 12, though, she was caught in a diablerie which left permanent damage to her lower spine. Her spinal cord and nerves weren't directly damaged, but the vertebrae were deformed, leaving her in severe chronic pain.

Once it was safe for Rina to travel, she transferred to Brunnhold so she could be closer to her parents. Rina needed accommodations to attend Brunnhold and the administration fought her family's every request tooth and nail. The administration fully believed the girl should be home-schooled, but her family refused to give up the opportunity to build an organic social network.

Eventually, the administration said she could stay on the first floor in the dorms until she turned 16 and could use the service elevators each building had. They also agreed that Rina could have a personal servant to help her with daily things like bathing and getting dressed, along with a pet miraan to help her in the classroom. Estella was brought over from her family's Mugroba residence to be Rina's servant. The administration fought the idea of allowing Rina to bring a pet miraan into classrooms particularly hard, but once she showed them that it would be much less disruptive to have a miraan pick up a pencil or help her get a book than it would be to have to ask a fellow student to help her, they reluctantly agreed.

But the administration refused to order teachers to give Rina more time to get to class and they said that if her servant or miraan started causing disruptions, they would revoke the privilege. Estella usually keeps to herself, focusing on small tasks like sewing while she sits outside Rina's classrooms. Rina has, thus far, avoided this problem with her miraan, Saida, by training her to stay in a special bag that Rina carries or under Rina's blanket if the miraan isn't needed and only using her servant at school when she needs to go to the bathroom.

Rina settled into Brunnhold life quickly, though her anxiety remained a problem. When Norwyn Siordanti was assigned to tutor her in Static Conversation, he noticed her anxiety and suggested sewing to help her with it. Rina had always been interested in fashion design since her ja was a textiles importer, so when she found out that sewing did indeed calm down her anxiety, a passion for fashion design was ignited.

When Rina was 16, her parents rented her a house in the Stacks and Rina moved in. She hired servants to help her around the house. She often had to wake up before dawn to get to class on time, but the freedom of living on her own did wonders for her mental health. Living on campus meant living surrounded with passives with unknown diableries, which she still found terrifying. It also meant that people teased her because she had to live with the first years. Once she was on her own, she became more extroverted and often invited her friends over to spend the night. The parties she threw for her birthday and other holidays were legendary and, a few times, warranted a visit from the Seventen. The attendees were always relatively safe, though, as her parents made sure to hire chaperones to break up any fights or other problematic behavior.

When it was time to specialize, Rina decided to specialize in Clairvoyant Conversation, with a secondary specialization of Perceptive. She also decided that she would like to go into politics. She knows that any path she chose would be a hard path, since many people judged her for being a disabled person who didn't stay properly hidden away, but Rina never backed down from a challenge. With the current liaison to Thul Ka university close to retirement, Rina decided she would approach him about taking his job when she graduated. She enjoys arranging the transfer of knowledge and ensuring that the galdori race continued to advance scientifically. She knows that many people thought of the university liaisons as glorified paper pushers, but she has plans to encourage independent inventors and scientists to collaborate with the universities more openly.

But, as she's grown and changed, she is starting to reconsider that idea of working as a liaison. She is finding that she has a knack for business and enjoys brokering deals to enhance her ja's business. As of right now, the son of her ja's brother is set to inherit the company, but both her ja and her ja's brother have doubts about whether he'd manage the business well. She's talked to the current liaison about her growing desire to work as a business person and they've been talking about some possibilities for the future.

Rina is currently entering 9th form and has continued her internship. She still experiments with Clairvoyant Conversation, though research is not her focus.

Career and Income

Occupation

Rina is a student at Brunnhold University and an university liaison intern.

Income: Wealth Level

Wealthy: While Rina's family lives opulently because of their 3 incomes, her parents ensure that Rina lives comparatively humbly. But she still lives the life of a wealthy galdor.

Housing and Inventory

Housing: Type

Rina's parents rent her a house in the Stacks, where she lives with her servants. The house is on one of the main roads, close to the university. It's made of red brick and is wider than most of the houses surrounding it, to compensate for Rina's wheelchair. A wrought iron fence surrounds the house and there is a ramp from the front door to the gate.

Rina lives on the first floor, which holds the master bedroom with closet, a lavatory with a tub, a small library, a parlor, a kitchen and pantry, and a modest dining room. There are 2 more bedrooms on the second floor, servants' quarters for 3 servants, and a second lavatory. There is also an attic and basement, both of which are used for storage.

Each bedroom has a good quality bed – double-sized in the main bedrooms and single-sized in the servants' quarters. There is also a wardrobe, vanity, and desk in each of the main bedrooms. There is a small wardrobe in the servants' bedrooms.

She has a small back yard with a carriage house. The carriage house has a stable big enough for 2 horses attached to it.

Inventory

Rina has all the necessities she needs. She has a rather large amount of clothing, which takes up both her closet and a wardrobe in her bedroom.

Rina owns a copper-colored miraan with piebald copper and white wings named Saida. Saida is trained to help Rina with small tasks that are difficult for her to do on her own. She has a passive to help her with everyday tasks like dressing herself and bathing, but all her other servants are human. Her passive, Estella, accompanies her to campus to help her when she's at school. Her personal butler from childhood also moved in, along with a maid/cook that she hired. These three servants live in the servants' quarters.

Rina also owns a private carriage big enough for her wheelchair and has a driver to ensure that she makes it to class on time. There's also a stable boy that comes every day to take care of the horses for her carriage. These servants do not live on the premises, as her parents don't approve of her living with male servants for safety reasons. Her butler is the exception, as he's been serving Rina's family for 15 years.

Driver: Gustav
Maid/Cook: Margaret
Personal helper: Estella
Stable boy: Claude
